Inexperienced, need ids
    #12721916 - 06/10/10 05:37 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I live in northern Idaho.
The first three pic are what i believe to be chanterelles, not sure if they are false chanterelles though.  They were in a dark shaded area under some pines right off the bike trail. No idea what the rest are. Matsutakes grow in these parts.

Found these all on one mountainside right against the road

These ones were just hangin around on the ground hiking under trees, very shady.

Thanks to all that can help.

When I look for pics of the clavipes, it seems their gills abruptly stop. I'm missing your distinction especially the coloring as well.  What is the tell-tale sign that I'm not seeing?

I'm not sure what you're asking. Clitocybe clavipes is mostly found under pines in duff, with a cap and stem are brown, pretty much the same color, no veil on the stem, stem enlarging on the bottom, gills somewhat decurrent and whitish. Pine needles sticking to the base of stem are pretty common with this mushroom.

So habitat and general appearance are the tell signs for me with this mushroom.

If you mean how I distinguish from gibba, gibba is more flesh or orange color and found, I think,  under hardwoods, and in my experience, less robust than gibba, somewhat smaller and the stem is not as robust with respect to the cap size and the gills aren't as deep.
