Large-Scale Strainer Tek

A while back I did a Huge-Ass Strainer Tek.
The task of building it is prolly a lil excessive, and conveniently I stumbled upon a far easier approach.
Since I now have a Flow-Hood my old glove box was just taking up room in my limited grow space.

I was going to throw it out, then I got the idea. I pondered the idea as I made my way to Home-Depot for the supplies.
First I worked a lil geometry in-order to cut out openings that worked with the arm homes already in the tote. The main objective was to leave lil strips of plastic for support of the later screening instead of a huge hole and the weight of the grains pulling down full force on the delicate screen...

I only made holes in the bottom and two of the sides as you can see. I wanted to leave the other two sides for residual support, apposed to having a flimsy/holy mess in the end.
Drilled holes as starting points for the jig-saw blade:

Cut out the holes:

Quote:
Idea: Later I came up with a more simplified way of cutting out openings apposed to doing all this precise measurements, and tedious drilling/jig-saw work I did here. I came to the conclusion that it would be far less work to simply use a Hole-Saw Drill-Bit to cut out various hole arrangements all over the 3 sides...

Then I took my dremel tool with a router bit and scuffed up the plastic real good around the holes. We'll get to why I did this later:

I cut out a 18x30inch section of screen:

Then laid/lined it down in the tote, blanketing/positioning it over the walls with holes. I drilled small various holes in the plastic to accept small zip-ties to hold the screen in place.

I realized in order for contents to drain well, it needed to be elevated from sitting flush with the ground surface it rests against as you give it time to drain. Thus I cut out small blocks of wood as elevation feet, and secured them with some screws/washers.

Then we get to the final step, and reason behind scuffing up the plastic around the holes as stated earlier. I secured the screen to the tote (Outside the use of the zip-ties) with Epoxy-glue. The scuffed up surface adds something for the glue to hold on to better apposed to a super smooth surface that it will just chip and break away from if and when the plastic tote undergoes bending/flexing under the weight of contents in the strainer.

Of-course you can go as large scale as you want with whatever sizable tote as you want. Altercations are up to you, I just hope this got some gears moving for you guys.
Enjoy!

Nice write up.
I just use a huge window screen... I'm kinda lazy.

Fucking kick ass Boris
I was just thinking of making a frame out of 1 x 1's or 2 x 2's and stapling some screen down...but thhis is a really good idea!

I'm building a couple of these for some friends around here, so I'm actually able to recreate my idea with the new builds.

Sweet. I've been using my scuba gear mesh bag and 5-gallon bucket, but i have plenty of extra tubs to convert to something like this.

I found this nifty contraption at the store I decided to shop at when looking for mono sized GH trays.

There called, "pull-outs, or runner-drawers", but all I see is a grain strainer... They come in many many many different sizes. The One I got is 13L X 17W X 11H, and was $20. They have 2 sizes that are larger then this one I believe.
I found them at some store called The Container Store. The name alone supports why I went there looking for GH-trays . Anyways... The, "Elfa" brand originated in Sweden, then got bought out by the american known, "Container Store". ...Good, strong product; Its all metal mesh, lightly soldered or some kind of welding to bind the seams. Then painted white.

Yeah, I've seen small personal office desk sized trash-cans / waist-baskets made from mesh KINDA like this. But most every one I looked at, I questioned if the holes were small enough so that the grain couldn't fall through. Most of them had holes too large, or questionable.

Nice one. I made something similar with welded rebar for the frame. Just welded the bars together and used some wire to bind the mesh in place. Works well! Your teks are perfect for people without access to a welder, but it's nice to have something indestructible to work with, if you can find someone to do the metalwork. A scrap metal yard has all the metal rod you'll need for cheap.
