Best/worst Coir brands...

Seems that some brands of coir add trich as a soil conditioner. This is a bad thing. SOme brands are also more dirty and filled with more random stuff like twigs and rocks and sand, also leading to more contam.
I'd like to create some consensus about what brands you coir people have used, which ones you like best, and why. Also which ones to stay away from.
I've found ecoearth to be very high quality, low to no contamination rate, however they don't sell it in bulk and it's overly expensive to buy a lot in those 3packs. Is there anything that is high quality, trich free like eco earth, but comes in larger cheaper amounts?

Check Amazon.com for eco-earth deals, last time I ordered it I got it for just over .60 cents a brick. The more you buy the better the deal because of a flat shipping rate. CH

Exo Terra Coco husk DOES not work. Have seen few posts with people asking bout this brand, it is not good. I thankfully found this link before I mixed it up http://www.sporelab.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14011&highlight=coir

I remember seeing the Coco Husk package right beside this.
Good thing this appealed to me more than the Coco Husk.
I bet it was the word SUBSTRATE

Even tho it is not good for mushroom cultivation, it IS good as a very expensive mulch layer for your garden lol. I get my coir from gardening stores, it usually costs me about 2-4 dollars for a HUGE brick. It is not a brand name but works good and seems to be enough substrate for a long while in regards to cultivation. Also works fantastic in the garden and for potted plants.

Are you refering to the Coco Husk that you mentioned above?
Cause IMO the Plantation Soil is (so far) excellent for growing shrooms.

Best deal on coir I have discovered to date is BEATSPEAT brand coco coir. This stuff comes in 4 packs of 12 inch by 12 inch squares. A whopping 5 kilo grams of coco coir for 9.99 at ace hard ware. At the link below you will find it order-able on line for 7.99 plus shipping and handling. http://www.groworganic.com/item_PSO113_Beats_Peat_3_Cu_Ft_Brick.html?welcome=T&theses=7477050

These coir "tiles", as I refer to them as, equal 6 times as much coir as those standard 3 packs everybody around here is so fond of for just a few bucks more. Each "coir tile" is worth two of the standard standard coir bricks used in several teks all over this site. A few examples at the links below to name a few. Double up on the measurements in these teks for each "coir tile" and bada-bing. You've got coir. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9289857#9289857 http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11916595#11916595

How do you break apart those huge bricks? I hate trying to chisel it apart cuz it just turns to dust and gets everywhere. I once sliced my finger open trying to cut it apart. Coir is cheap and awesome but very messy unless you use the whole brick at once.

Uhm, same as Hamloaf - BeatsPeat and ZooMed (Eco Earth) bricks. BeatsPeat is $9.99 at Krogers, I got a package on sale for like $7 and just ran out after some massive grows. Highly recommended!!!
@El Duderino : Welcome to Shroomery! Just score the bricks with a box cutter knife and break them over an edge. No problems...

Just throw your mix together in 10 gallon storage tote. Pour your boiling water in and come back in an hour and stir. That simple. The boiling water softens the coir to the point where it can be stirred after sitting for an hour in the boiling water with large, heavy duty kitchen spoon.
Coir is highly contaminate resistant and can be stored for a few months and remain at field capacity for a few months. Presuming you keep the lid on your coir until it's showtime. Store at regular room temperatures.

Thanks...I've actually been lurking around for a few years...I had an account when I did my first grow (wbs on coir in tubs) but haven't been around much since. I had to make a new one because I can't even remember the old one.

Looks like "beats peat" is the best deal so far. Anyone else had good experiences with it? Is it much different looking from plantation soil, or eco earth?

The exo-terra coco-husk stuff does work fine, plenty of people like it a lot since it reminds them of working with wood chips. Do a search for coco-husk, you will find that it does work, and works plenty well too. Heck, even RR has a post about it specifically that i remember running across while searching for this stuff.
As for the OP. I just got some Eco-earth coir, 3 brick pack for $4.99 on Amazon. It's great deal. And the stuff is as good as it gets.

Beats peat is a very fibrey coir, the reptile bedding is much better because it is fine and mulchy
Beatspeat is kinda like hair , IME but works great, just leaves a totalled substrate
