Contamination?
    #1271127 - 02/02/03 02:05 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I went away for a few days and when i got back, my casing was covered in white fuzzy stuff. It doesn't smell bad at all and it's not completely covered... does anyone have pics of healthy growth and contaminations? The second generation was just picked a week ago and i rehydrated the cake with cold water and then poured the excess out. Thanks for any help you can give me, i'm just starting to get the hang of things.

Well, without a pic, we're going to have to make some assumptions...by "white stuff" do you mean thick white mycelium? I know you said you're just getting the hang of this, so maybe you don't know what that is. If, in fact, that is what it is...than you're in good shape -  otherwise, you could be talking about a contam. known as cobweb, which is not good at all...depending on how long it has been there, it can be killed if it is still young with h2o2 and water, however, I would wait for one of the experts to verify what i've said before you do anything...a pic would definitely help though

i dont have a digital scanner so it would take awhile to post a pic, it looks sorta like the stuff that grew at the base of the mushrooms from the last batch, only a little more 'finger-like' instead of just fluff. does that make sense?

It could be mycelium overlay of the lop layer. Wait and see if it grows (how it grows), smells or changes color. If indeed it's overlay, you should patch those areas with a bit of sterilized casing material.

okay, i misted the areas of white with peroxide and most of it dissolved, but not all... should i mist again or would too much peroxide hurt the shroomies? Thanks so much for all the help, i really appreciate it a lot! I'm also fanning it more frequently and i'm making a bigger tank for it so that it gets more air. Thanks a lot! Anyother hints?

better to get rid of all the cobweb and risk damaging your mycelium, than leave some cobweb and have it come back tommorow. plus h202 will not hurt mycelium much
