This might be a no brainer but...
    #12709270 - 06/08/10 01:42 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Was wondering how illegal it is to grow poppy plants in my yard.

I have more than a few growing with other plants as decoration. Should I worry about it or not? I planted them as decoration only, but they are actives. How dumb am I for doing this? I really really don't want the cops bothering me over this at all. I know the chances are slim than many people would even see these flowers in my backyard, but would it give them reason to search my house or lock me up for just growing them with other flowers?

This may be a no shit their illegal, or don't worry about it if your not cutting them.

So should I worry about it? Should I pull them up and get rid of them? I don't need cops coming in my house. I'd be screwed.

I can't find a single definitive answer online about them. I know poppies are in a lot of gardens all over the US.

You can have them growing all you want. But you can't cultivate them for opium, that's the illegal bit

I mean, they sell the seeds legally. If some jackass reported you to the police, I highly doubt they could get a warrant on you unless they had saw you/had proof that you we're scraping the pods up.

Than again... you're in Indiana.

Don't post advice on shit you know nothing about!

Opium poppies are specifically scheduled.  The plants themselves are illegal, just as illegal as having a pound of opium.

While it might be rare for cops to bust people for this it is still highly illegal.  Considering that you'd be facing years in prison, it's stupid to grow them for decoration.

^^^

This. Had an entirely clean and legitimate friend nearly bite one over a poppy garden, even after flowering.

Thats crazy!

I don't know if they are illegal here but I grow them every year as ornamentals in the garden. They are a very popular garden plant and I doubt that a cop would know whether they are opium poppies or not (unless you're scraping them or something).
