Free Voicemail to Email

Could anyone recommend a voicemail provider that offers local numbers? I had one a while back but it looks like they all charge $20 a month now.

I'd use Google Voice if it's for residential purposes but not for business.

You have no rights to your GV number. They will not let you move the number to another service (they are not a CLEC or ILEC and are not under the FCC regulations for portability). The number is access to the services they provide and since you are not paying for them they can drop you at any time. I've had clients who have wanted to port the number to our service when they added a partner, assistant or move to a new location but GV has all the rights to the number. You get what you pay for.

Someone told me that GV only works with your own #, but they were apparently mistaken.

If anyone has a Google Voice invite please PM me, I have trades. :awesome:

with gv you can either use your existing number or pick a new one.  it will let you search or available alpha/numeric numbers.  it basically is just call forwarding, people call your gv number and it calls the phone you tie to the acct (i.e. your cell phone).  if you cave a calling circle you can include your gv# in you circle and set it up so incoming calls show your gv# and have free incoming calls at the expense of caller id (you can still see the real numbers in your call history on the internet).

I have GV and would give you an invite but I see no way of doing that.  Maybe I dont have any?  I only use it for voicemail as I like the google voice app for android.  It's a much better voicemail system than having to call in and listen to all your messages like an old tape voicemessage machine.  GV app is like Verizon visual voice mail only free.
