Casing
    #1270475 - 02/02/03 07:15 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

Help! I'm a novice grower, but have studied all the info. in these forums n order to obtain optimum knowledge and efficiency for my kids!!(shroomies)
I've followed all the steps to pin and fruit my casings:

-- Cased/incubated casings until approx. 20-50% colonized. and than cold-shocked to induce pinning. Casing contains (verm, peat, oyster, limestone) w/ pH-7.0

-- kept humidity levels b/w 82-92%(according to my humidity gauge)

-- lite misting and/or wick humidifier, fanned 2-5x a day

-- terrariums: airpumps, filtered holes at bottom(CO2 dispensing),10 gal, plexi-glas top for light.

** My cakes kicked ass and I got some huge fruits!!! But my casings won't do
S@*!#%T!!! I keep getting overlay!!! The mycelium don't seem to want to stop and pin, just keep colonizing despite the cold-shock. Can anyone give me an idea as to what I may be doing wrong!! My kids are from Equador and Puerto Rico.

I was having the same problem in one of my tubs. I cold shocked them 3 times and my atmosphere is perfect. I think that there is to many nutrients left and they just wanedt to keep colonizing. Yesterday, I had it and cold shocked them again and this morning it looks like it finally worked. I would say you have to be patient and as long as your atmosphere is perfect they will eventually grow.

3 guesses -

*despite the cold shock, are they now in the fruiting range (72-78F) ?
*to initiate pinning, you actually need 95-100% humidity. the figures you mention are for casings after pinset
*prs are well known to be aggressive, and must be fruited early. they have great momentum, and will keep colonising, even to the point of overlay, unless you stop their feast at, i dunno, 30% or something. normally you wait until 60% for other strains.

hope i helped

Too many nutes? The casing layer is supposed to be nutrient free.

I have cased PR's successfully. I let the casing incubate for 1 day (the myc had only just poked though - say 5%) then move to the terrarium. Alternatively case and fruit with no inncubation also works well with PR's.

If you keep getting overlay after recasing just let it go.

Do you recommend putting the casings in with the perlite to get the 100% humidity in order to initiate pinning and then move to a terrarium with 82-92% humidity?

germinate spores, then colonise substrate (in an incubator), then case (make a casing) by adding a layer of something, then wait for pins (pinset), then mature fruits ('cropping', or 'fruiting')

this sounds like your problem

I did all of that, but my shroomies didn't seem to pin; just colonize, maybe I needed to up the humidity like you said!?  Thanks.

I have some friends from Equador and they used to have an overlay problem...but I have found that cold shocking them and then after the cold shock...misting the walls with a H2O2/H20 solution and fanning a few times a day does wonders for making them show their wee little faces!

sorry for the confusion. By fruit I meant stick it in your terrarium (just being lazy with the typing).

I have never needed to put perlite in a terrarium that had a cased substrate in it. Also I tend to go with about 85 -90 % humidity throught terrarium cycle with casings.

Do a search in Growlog forum or mush pics for PR's. (great source of info) +my pics of pr's fruiting with no overlay at 80% humid with no perlite.
