21st Century Philosophy of Fiction

The novel seems passé to me. All the stories have been told, and told again in many different ways. Is fiction still worth writing? If so, what sort of fiction?
I used to aspire to be a fiction writer, and still do write stories from time to time. But I am doubtful as to whether the art is worth anything more than my own enjoyment, and I probably won't pursue it seriously because there's hardly a penny to be found in it.
-------------------- “Strengthened by contemplation and study, I will not fear my passions like a coward. My body I will give to pleasures, to diversions that I’ve dreamed of, to the most daring erotic desires, to the lustful impulses of my blood, without any fear at all, for whenever I will— and I will have the will, strengthened as I’ll be with contemplation and study— at the crucial moments I’ll recover my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

If you're going to become a writer, don't do it for the money. As for originality, good luck.

There are the universal motifs and story patterns. Then there is the specific style and vibe of the culture/historical setting.
I think fiction authors paint the universal motifs with the context of the culture/history. That's what keeps the stories fresh and alive, and most importantly meaningful to the people reading them.
Just think of all the changes that have happened in the past 100 years, and how literature has changed in that time. The basic story of being human does not change, but the specific story of our time is changing rapidly. For the stories to survive, they must be rewrote.

What was the last truly original novel?
I'd vote for Fight Club.

After I wrote the OP I realized I had let my present cynical mindset alter my overall philosophy of fiction, and I am normally inclined to agree with what you're saying.
I have always valued myths and legends, and seen literature as an important part of mankind's growth in the modern era. But lately I have become disillusioned and felt as though all the myths and motifs could just as well be discarded, because they're just a form of make-up covering the vanity and savagery at the base of all human affairs.

A form of make-up!? They're the only thing that really lets us see it.
