Sealing Jars With Plastic Lids 1

I came up with an easy way to create an air & water tight seal for mason jars with plastic lids. Many of you who have made liquid culture jars using the plastic lids that Ball sells know that the lids have a tendency to allow water to leak out when the jar is tipped or shaken. This is obviously a contamination vector and should be avoided. This really simple method solves that problem.
Step 1: Go to your local hardware store and look in the plumbing department for PTFE thread seal tape. Just like the name suggests, the tape is used to seal plumbing pipe threads. As you'll soon see, this stuff also works great for sealing jars too. Since it is made of PTFE it can withstand temperatures of 500F without any degradation, so autoclaving it is no problem. Here is a picture of what the tape looks like:

Step 2: Wrap the tape around the threads on the jar about 4-5 times, allowing the tape to just come over the top of the rim like so:

Step 3: Put some water in the jar and screw the cap on tightly. Then shake it, flip it, etc to ensure that the seal is good. If the seal is good you should have no leaks:

Note: When autoclaving your jars with plastic lids don't screw the lid on tightly or the jar could explode since the only point for steam to enter or exit it through the small filter hole. Tighten the lid down after the autoclave has cooled completely using sterile precautions.
I hope that helps out some of you guys!

I've tryed them. I still use the metal lids.
Works fine. Metal is cheaper and works fine.
I have some on a few LC jars. Keeps the rust away.
I can send you two to test if you like.

Yes, that is also known as teflon thread tape, and no it does not contain lead. When you apply thread tape wrap it in a manner to not allow it to unwrap itself while tightening the lid. For example if you wrap it clockwise and tighten the lids in the same direction it wont unravel.

The biggest problem I had with plastic lids is the damn things would fly off during shaking even when tight, thus throwing grains all over the floor. RR

Thank you for your generous offer friend, but I just bought 2 packs of the lids. Then HorizonSpawn directed me to this thread b/c I was unaware of the issues w/ the plastic tops. So now I guess I'm going to have to get this tape too for them to be useable... or get the gaskets from TATTLER. Which route would be better? The tape or the gaskets?

The Gasket...
The tape is for jar threads, on "whole" plastic lids as pictured... Since these are like jar "caps" that use a norm jar band, id suggest some gaskets...
I bet they are the SAME that Oster uses for their blenders, that are PC'able... http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=oster+gasket&_sacat=See-All-Categories
Id suggest in a blender attachment or 2... Ghetto Eberbach...

That's what I have the whole plastic lids....

Bought those yesterday! I'm talking about using the gaskets that tattler sells w/ those lids... not the gasket for the lids that tattler sells. Feel me?

Gotcha... Im willing to bet either would work...
Back in the day, agar suggested using a tight fitting rubber band...
Teflon would surely work, but seems like such a pita...

agreed, that's why I'm wondering if the gaskets would be an easier/cleaner fit.

Don't get me wrong I still use the metal ones too, as you can see in the pic I posted. But they rust after a while and need to be replaced which means spending more money in the long run. Whereas the plastic lids can be reused indefinitely. The metal lids aren't that much cheaper anyway and you have to keep buying them. I'd rather pay a little extra for the plastic and never have to spend another penny on them. So if I can make it work just as effective weather it be w/ the tape or the gaskets, I'd rather go that route. Make sense?

Yes. Used to use that tape for LC lids all the time while and when I was making the transfer over to plastic lids with whatman filters and heavy duty injection ports. It makes a great seal at a good price.
I eventually got the rubber gaskets so I didn't have to keep purchasing material.
