Millet Husks?
    #1270426 - 02/02/03 08:59 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I have some organic white millet from local store. I'm not sure if it has husks or not. It was reasonably expensive, and I trial-ran some through PC, it all stuck together like a solid brick at the bottom, but I actually filled up the jar with water to about half way up the seed, and I am now reading that you should soak millet and then drain it before PC-ing.
So...
Am I using the right Millet?
Did they stick together because I added water?
Nowhere in the teks I read did it say to shake millet after PC-ing to loosen up kernals... Are you supposed to get a cake of Millet?

Please elaborate.....

Anno had a post somewhere that recommends a shaking schedule. I have used it successfully (well in terms of loose millet that is)

Shake immediately after pc'ing (absolutely essential shake)
Shake at 10% colonisation
Shake at 50%

Voila !

Plus I have pc'ed millet without either cooking it first or steeping for 24 hours with success (its just a matter of getting the water content right (I go for water up to 2/3 rd's the height of the millet.)

And lastely there are 2 types of millet hulled (i.e fit for human consumption or non hulled which is cheaper). Hulled has a habit of clumping morebecause its lost it's seed casing)

Hope this helps.

ps I have had success mixing popcorn and millet (the popcorn grains being bigger makes its even easier to shake up)

good luck

Read www.fungifun.org/grain and see if you have the right stuff. I think not.
