All of my jars stalled at the same time!
    #12671483 - 06/02/10 09:44 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I have 36 quart jars spawning with WBS right now. They were growing perfectly fine for about a two and a half weeks then all stalled at about 15%. It's now been another week and I have seen no growth.

As far s I can tell there are no contams, no wet spots, no trich, no greasy looking spots. They all look perfectly fine and healthy.. except that they aren't moving.

How long should it take to colonize a quart with PE? I know it's slower than the others.

Should I sacrifice one and open it to check for moisture content? Maybe they weren't wet enough?

Pe can take longer than others. If you started from spores and you do see signs of growth then I would just leave them and come back to them in a week or two. Start some more grain while you wait

Have you shaken them to redistribute the colonized grains?

I have read a few people saying they don't recommend the first shake until the jars are 30% colonized, but if they stalled out at 15% I'd give a good shake and see if that helps at all. Also, what temperature have you been colonizing them at...hopefully not too high as normal room temperature (70° F to 78° F) is all that is needed.

If the shake doesn't help I'd let sit or toss while starting up a new batch.

If they all stalled at the same time, I'd say lack of gas exchange is a likely culprit.  They should have been fully colonized in that amount of time.  Sacrifice one to see if it stinks.

Dyskon,

I agree with Roger Rabbit. What kind of jar lid gas exchange are you providing your mycelium? Or it is moisture content. Your grains may have become to dry. Like the man said. Sacrifice one up to research and give it a wiff.

I dont think GE is the problem. I am using a tyvek filter with 4 decently large sized holes in the jar with micropore tape over the innoc holes.

I didn't simmer. Maybe they are too dry?

dangit i was hoping i could drop this info, but ya beat me to it:shakefist:  if its not lack of GE then it may have stalled b/c it was too dry.

I opened one and it seemed fine.. No weird smell, buildup, anything like that.

I shook all of them and they TOOK OFF hardcore. It's only been a couple of days and they are almost completely done colonizing
