Is it ok to use oversoaked birdseed?
    #1269887 - 02/02/03 02:43 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I soaked a batch of wild bird seed after I skimmed off the sunflower seeds it's been soaking 60 hours. I just forgot about it. Is it still ok to use or should I do another batch and wait another 24 hours?

You coiuld try using it, but only if you mix it with a fair amount of moist vermiculite or perlite.
Otherwise you will get a big clump of seed unable to shake.

I do a 60/40 rye berry to bird seed and it works great. see if adding the rye berry soaks some of the moisture up. Also are you pressure cooking?

I don't have any rye berry. Yes I PC at 15 PSI for 1 hour, I did for 15 min when I did PF jars but I think birdseed takes longer.

Check carefully to make sure none of them have sprouted yet.  60 hours is quite awhile for millet seeds to stay soaked.  They are germinating right now if they haven't already. . .
then your best bet would be to plant the sprouted seeds outside in a sunny area
Good luck

Ok, none had sprouted. Now, I just got back from work and am going to try to use the seeds, but since I went to work and came backI think the seeds have started to ferment, it's beginning to get a bad alcohol scent to it. I washed the seeds thouroughly a couple times and will try using them now. I don't want to waste quart jars if they don't work so I'll use some 1/2 pint ones for this experment.

Well, I'm PC 3 ?pint jars full right now. Sort of a test. I washed the seed real well and I'll see how they look when they're done. Worst case is I innoc them and nothing happens. I've got 4 syringes to play with and for all my quart and 1/2 pint jars I only need to so I'm not worried about thoe right now. I'll see how the jars look in 1 hour...

The jars were out of the PCer a few minutes ago. I was trying to shake them but the bottom wouldn't shake, it was like much on the bottom. Thats a bad sign. I've had it that way with too much moisture in PF jars and the wet goop never colonizes even if the whole rest of the jar does. I opened the steaming hot jars and it was thich on the bottom there. I think if I would have innoced it it wouldn't have colonized the bottom half of the jars. I won't bother with this bunch of seed. I'll start fresh.
