the Joker isn't "insane" he's "super sane" he is the only one who really knows whats going on. He is the only character in the batman universe that is aware of (and breaks) the 4th wall
Quote:
Over several decades there have been a variety of depictions and possibilities regarding the Joker's apparent insanity. Grant Morrison's graphic novel Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth suggests that the Joker's mental state is in fact a previously unprecedented form of "super-sanity," a form of ultra-sensory perception. It also suggests that he has no true personality of his own, that on any given day he can be a harmless clown or a vicious killer, depending on which would benefit him the most.
Quote:
The character is sometimes portrayed as having a fourth wall awareness. In Batman: The Animated Series, the Joker is the only character to talk directly into the "camera" and can be heard whistling his own theme music in the episode adaptation of the comic Mad Love. Also, in the episode "Joker's Wild", he says into the camera, "Don't try this at home, kids!" In the Marvel vs DC crossover, he also demonstrates knowledge of the first Batman/Spider-Man crossover even though that story's events did not occur in the canonical history of either the Marvel or DC universe. On page five of "Sign of The Joker", the second half of the "Laughing Fish" storyline, the Joker turns the page for the reader, bowing and tipping his hat in mock politeness. On the official websites and associated promotional material for The Dark Knight, graffiti characteristic of the Joker can be found.[51] On the website IBelieveinHarveyDentToo.com, hidden among laughter is the message "See you in December", referring to the release of the film's trailer.

It was Shephard Fairey, or something like that.
He did it with the tag "why so socialist?"

Nicholson's Joker was great for the tone of the film that he was in, Ledger's was great for his own, darker, film.
I used to watch Batman the Animated Series as a kid and you just blew my mind with the second quotation you have there CosmicFool.
I'd like to see that super computer and Batman's double in a film!

Jim Carey could have been a good joker if the movie was actually any good. He didn't write/direct Batman Forever, he just played the role the way it was asked.
Heath Ledger did a good joker, but it was not the end all be all of joker performances. He just put his own spin on the insanity. Which I think is the biggest problem with replacing him. You either have to change the way the Joker acts or have someone do a cheap imitation of Heath. It would probably be a bad idea to put him in a movie now, but if we were talking 2 or 3 movies from now it wouldn't matter.

I also thought about Jim Carey playing The Joker. I certainly hope to see him play him one day.
Heath Ledger play him GREAT, but it was different. It also helped that his messed up face was more realistic.
I really hope Harley Quinn is in the next one .

Those prople who think Heath did some uber-religious performance as the Joker obviously didn't read the early Batman comics with the Joker in them
Jacks Joker was a far more realistic version of the comic book Joker
I agree with Pris on this one, his performance was ..... meh

I think you're right in that a lot of us never read the Batman comics. I certainly didn't. I also think you're right in saying that this is partly why we liked Heath Ledger's performance so much.
Maybe he didn't uphold the Joker tradition or whatever, but he gave a very visceral and very modern performance. That's exactly what I liked so much: he didn't worry about "acting like the Joker." In a way, it was a totally new character.

I liked Jack Nicholson's portrayal too but Heath Ledger was able to better pull off that spark of pure insanity IMO.
