1st grow, P.subs - Woodlovers "ghetto Tek" 2

Hi kids..
Was hoping for a bit of advice on my wee set-up. I call it "ghetto Tek" which is fitting, as you will see. It's really just a bit of fun. If nothing else, it will probably at least generate a few giggles from you more experienced growers.
So.. here's how it goes..
Went for a walk in some local bush and found a small rotting log with fruiting Psilocybe Subaeruginosa. Bought the whole thing home and harvested the mushrooms.
Then was left with log full of Mycelium.
Did a whole lot of reading on what I could do with it.. hmmmmmmm... so soaked some cardboard and some wood chips(collected from a park) in water for a couple of hours. And some verm I happened to have already.
Lined a seed raising container with a little soil (1cm) then covered in pieces of the soaked cardboard. sprinkled in Verm and a few wood chips, then broke up one of the mycelium logs and spread it around.. Then more verm and wood chips and laid other log in as is and surrounded with more sprinklings of everything.
Misted everyday and keep outside under the house with see-through lid closed and a small amount of natural light...
2 weeks later...
Small success.. but there are quite a few small pins that have developed on the log. Those 2 tall ones took over 10 days to become that big. Is that the normal growth rate? The mycelium is slowly spreading around but very slowly.
What I am hoping to do is transfer this to an outdoor patch which i can set up. Have done plenty of reading here on this but most people use contaminated cakes, which I don't have.
I could easily grow more mycelium if extracting some from the the set-up I have would work, or something. Any suggestions?
Also.. when would be the best time to transfer this outside? It's beginning of winter here now, but still very mild, like autumn weather. Should I wait till more mycelium has grown? Will the mycelium be super slow as the tray is in cold fruiting conditions? In 2 months I'm going overseas for 10 weeks, so be good to get it outside to let mother nature take over before then.
What should I do from here?

If it's going to be getting cold I would say it's probably not the best idea to keep it outside since snow and cold temps will cause the myc to stop growing and such. I would get a print from those fruits (or clone lc) then maybe do an indoor grow with them during the winter months. That's my suggestion.

As it seems, the whole "cardboard + wood chip" thing wouldn't have been necessary. It looks as if the fruits have grew directly from the colonized log you've collected and they most likely would have grown if you just took the log and put it outside of your house and kept it moist.
Wood loving Psilocybes need about a 3/4 of a year to establish their environment enough to develop fruits.
So what you should do is to create more mycelium on wood chips and spawn them to an outdoor bed, so you have the chance of getting some fruits next year.
I'd also take some spore prints.

You are totally right.. They have fruited from the log... but mycelium is growing into the other woodchips and cardboard. I was trying to encourage it to grow onto more. I'm not expecting any fruits from anywhere else except the log, just hoping mycelium will spread more in the meantime...
I do plan on taking a spore print.. then making a liquid culture and growing more spawn in jars on popcorn or brown rice and adding that to outdoor bed too... Is this the way to go? I may be able to collect a little more colonized wood chip over the next couple of days.
There is no snow here in winter. sub tropical N.Z. Temps range between 8 low and 16 high over winter. Is it still ok to transfer outside soon? Maybe add spawn jars through-out the year as I make them? ... then hope for decent fruiting next season?
Thanks for all the replies.. Having a great ol' time!!

Oh.. and I just thought I would add that buying spores syringes for any advanced indoor grow is not really an option since I live on an island which has the strictest agriculture boarder controls in the world.
This is kinda the only way to cultivate at the moment.

You should always keep in mind, that the mycelial networks of outdoor beds suffer from any kind of "wood robbery". If it's only a few pieces, it's OK though.
You can easily make an ass load of colonized wood chips from only a few, so you probably don't really need any more.
Since knock ups from wild prints can be a tricky thing (due to the potential contaminants on the cap), I wouldn't really go for a LC. You can make one simultaneously to a few jars, but I wouldn't really bet on it working.
The safest way would be to work with agar here. When you don't want to work with agar, you should knock up a few jars and see if the print was OK. This way you don't wait weeks for the LC to be ready and probably knocking up big amounts of substrate, only to see molds thriving.

Great.. thanks for the advice Fahkface. Will do some reading up on agar. (sounds technical.!.)

Got a present for you Miss Match
I would agree to take the agar route, and get some bulk spawn going... indeed! I remember an outdoor tek from the Netherlands... lemme find the link...
http://www.mushmush.nl/?page=begin%5Cmethods%5Cgrowing_the_woodlovers_outdoors
There it is!
Agar isn't hard at all! It sounds technical but its basically a starch jello in a plate that lets mycelium grow on it. Just do your research and you will be just fine, as what you did up there is almost more technical :P
Using that tek I linked you, or something similar, you can leave it sitting until you get back from your trip with no issue. Then... you will be the someone local with clean prints

Prints are legal in NZ and Australia for microscopy purposes (and should make it through), syringes are not and will get taken by customs

Nice work Miss Match.
Seems to me that wood loving subs don't really need complicated tek: add mycelium to new chips, keep moist, and you have spawn to create new colonies, or leave to fruit.
Letting a few of the fruits mature fully ensures lots of new spores are added; add new chips to the top (don't disturb the mycelium if you don't need to), and wait for fruiting next autumn.
Inski had a good thread (he's got lots actually, and they're all top notch) where he experimented with adding chips to existing mycelium in various ways and observing the resulting growth: adding a new layer on the top with no disturbance was the outperformer.
One thing I am conscious of is avoiding the use of chips that are possibly already contaminated with another fungi, although I have read much evidence that woodloving psilocybes are vigorous and tend to take over anyway, but no point in giving competitors a head start.
A great source of fresh chips is a local arborist: they're chipping every day, and can't give it away fast enough, esp if you just want a couple of bucketfuls.
I would have been here with my 2 cents when this thread was started if I knew it existed... I remember your posts on last years thread, but I don't recall any reference to this grow.
I posted my last years grow here.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!
And cheers Captain.. Yes i was reading through your thread earlier! It is amazing how things can get lost in forum-world and we miss these things. I did read through numerous outdoor teks last year including Inskis ones while getting this going. I kinda knew this would work without a huge amount of effort if I gave the mycelium a good start. What you've suggested is pretty much what I'll do. I'm going to see if i'll get more than one flush though, waiting till the end of season before adding more woodchips to expand the bed. I also have some Weraroa and subsecotioides mycelium spots growing too but not holding my breath for those to fruit.
I'll try add more pics and progress reports but work is eating away my quality gardening and pic taking time right now! I like your daily progress shots.. beautiful!

Hi Miss Match,
I also remember you from last year (I lost my "Lost Prophet" password, appropriately).
Impressive grow! I did something similar. I took a shallow layer of wood chips from two of my favourite patches, potted them, and now pins are coming up in one pot.
I'll be interested to see how long yours keep fruiting for. Good luck!

Hi im in nz i could post you some Cambodian LC or Spore water if you like in a vial or something,if you want it in a syringe you will need to send me a clean syringe as i hate buying these at my local pharmacy lol. Ive ordered prints online twice and a mycopore vial into nz with success. Had no success from the mycopore vial so far tho. Good work on the subs Ive made outdoor patches at my last house and have got some from this Autumn colonizing inside now, then discovered they're already growing at my new house anyway!
