Hey RR,
I just received a block of shiitake colonated sawdust, but it arrived rather broken up, and so I am thinking of spawning it to a mixture of wood chips and sawdust.
...but is casing suggested? Is this approach viable?
Do I follow the extras of other species, i.e. add gypsum and/or lime (Ph desired?)
Can/should I add verm to the bulk mix to improve moisture retention?
Well, I am reading on, and will answer my own question when I can.
Thanks,
JD

You don't case shiitake. It fruits best from supplemented sawdust. You could sterilize up a few bags of supplemented sawdust and then use the bag you bought to inoculate them. RR

I need to add a question....
I have been reading Shiitake notes all evening, and now am looking for a local seller of the sawdust pellets that some are using.
I saw a photo of one growers bag of pellets, but cannot find it again.
What I is a brand name to assist my search of local hardware stores that supply these items.
Can anyone report the brand name of the sawdust pellets they use?
(or better still, how/where one gets these things in So Cal?)

Brand name isn't important, but the tree species is. You might have a hard time finding hardwood sawdust in your area. There's a few shiitake strains that are suited for growing on straw, so that might be an alternative. I'm doing some experiments growing on softwoods as well, but I live in an area with a lot of sawmills, so sawdust is easy to come by. If you have to ship it in, you'll spend more than the mushrooms are worth. RR

Do you have any problems with insects fruiting them in the grass like that?

Not really. If I don't pick soon enough, the flies lay eggs, which turns to maggots. That's not a problem yet though. We just had another hard freeze last night. It's still 25F outside this morning. What's weird is we hardly had a winter at all, with very little snow, and now that it's supposed to be warming up for spring, it's staying cold. It's sure playing hell with our garden, but the shiitake 75 is still fruiting outside, even with freezing temps nearly every night.

It's a nice hassle-free way to fruit them then. Do the blocks eventually succumb to insects of any sort?
So the freezing temps don't affect fruitbody formation?

Nope. I've got blocks fruiting now that were in the pictures at the start of this thread from last year. They were out all summer last year, and all winter. We just picked a few pounds off them yesterday. Insects really aren't much of a problem, other than the flies, which around here don't come out until July anyway.
I've noticed Robins pecking at the blocks, and then taking pieces of mycelium back to their nest to feed the babies. It's cute to watch, and they don't do much harm. RR

robins typically feed worms or larvae to their chicks. those blocks might have some infestation, could pose a problem if the public comes out. i must say you have one hell of an operation going up there, kudos

Wow, that's impressive. How long do you find the blocks last for before they are spent and how many flushes would you get on average?

Speciality meat markets, bbq grill/wood stove outlets and the hardware stores like ace.
The meat markets have bags marked "All natural" and have a check mark on the side of the bag listing the tree species. I usually pick up alder. If there is none of that I get oak. If you want a large amount like a pallet, call the name on the bag and they will hook you up. One of these 40lb bags will make up 20 to 28 medium size bags depending on your fill. You can make it go even further by buying a 50lb compressed bag of rice hulls for 4-6 bucks from the local feed store and using it at 25% of your mix. You can pasteurize these pellets by taking a medium filter patch bag and adding 3 cups of wood pellets and into it 4 cups of 170 degree water. Fold the bags over after the standing water is gone and allow to cool..................inoculate and shake. 20-30% spawn rate

Thank you for taking the time!
I did a site search on Ace and Home Depot, but "sawdust" got zero hits, and so I was looking for a brand name to improve the search.
No worries. I will just run by the local Ace and then HD if needed.

Google search for 'hardwood sawdust pellets' and find a supplier near you. They average about $150 per ton. If you try to buy small bags, the cost will eat you up. RR
