First time growing

Hello, I've been wanting to grow shrooms for quite some time now and today I got my first syringes so I am all set. Tommorow is shopping day
So start, I was thinking of using the PFtek and then making a monotub. Will that combo work? I've seen that people mostly use the monotub for bulk grow, would it work for me? I think I'll start with 10 jars.
I hope to have some pics up tommorow and get a grow log going.

RR PF Tek Videos
Watch this videos and do that for a first time. Then, while everything is working itself out, read as much as you can from this forums, there a is lot of useful information going around.
Good luck with everything.

I did read/watch those, and I had decided monotub instead of a shotgun because there will be times that I wont be home for days and I wont be able to moisturize/vent the tub.
I've read that poeple still ventilate the shotgun tub. Can I just leave it unattended?

That combo will work but not worth the effort because it would take 20 half pint psilocybe fannaticus cakes to make 1 ten gallon tub. Alot of people are going to tell you to start with the psilocybe fannaticus tek for your beginner grow. Dunk and roll your consolidated cakes then place on a sheet of foil on a 5 inch bed of perlite in a shotgun terrarium.
Start with quart jars and grains. Rye berries or wild bird seed. Run your mycelium on grains then spawn your grains to a bulk subtrate such as coir in a 10 gallon mono tub. Grains colonize faster than psilocybe fannaticus cakes.
Shit I came up on multi spore LC's as a beginner. Grains are easy. Bulk grows can work for everone.
If in doubt, go with the psilocybe fannaticus tek.

Starting with cakes is never a bad idea to get the whole picture of the life cycle of said mushroom being grown. Check this link out as well as RR's BRF video and you should know what you need to pull it off. Shea25's Pf Tek done right http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11585613#11585613
I plug Shea's tek so much because its clear and well structured, should go in my sig lol

Ok, I ran into some problems today when I went shopping. I couldnt find neckless jars so I bought whisky glasses (1 problem solved). My other problem is that I couldnt find BRF anywhere.
I've got white rice flour, rye flour and linseed flour. I could get corn flour as well I believe. So far I think the best substitute for brf is the rye flour? I dont have a coffee gringer, just one of the normal big grinders for making shakes, etc. Will the rye work for the pf tek? I've found mixed results searching.

rye flour will work fine, i dont know about the others. ive used a blender before to gring brown rice, it works, it just takes longer than with a coffee grinder.

I found some brown rice and used my grinder to make flour of it, worked fine
Also bought a pressure cooker, but its small so I guess I will do 5 jars today and 5 tommorow. Today I'll do all brf and tommorow I'll make a 50/50 mix with some other flour.
Cleaned my whole apartment to start the cultivation

Ok, got 5 jars inoculated and 4 more will follow in a few hours.
I just put the jars in a plastic tub and put the tub in my closet.
Now time to wait and see if it worked

Since tommorow I wont be able to, I just inoculated the remaining 4 hars I had. I let the pc cool down for around 6-7 hours, will that be fine?
Or did I just make a stupid newbie mistake by not waiting overnight? The jars didnt feel really cold to the touch, but they werent warm either. The first batch that was left overnight was cold to the touch. Do the last 4 have a chance?

a chance yeah. idk how much. you should be ok, but ive never gone less than 8hrs b4 noc and that was only once. 8hrs was ok. did you let them cool inside the pressure cooker?

Probably alright. I think 104F is the kill temp for spores.
Also, I use rye for my cakes. I just go a bit lighter on the ORF or a bit heavier on the verm. ORF holds a lot of water.
RR just posted in another thread about heat and innoc. He made a point that time is not the factor, temp is.
If the glass feels cool to ya, and your inoculating just on the other side of it, your probably doing just fine.

So its been around 10 days since inoculation, and I still dont have many signs of germination.
Is this normal? I guess its taking this long because my ambient temperature is around 60F.

yeah that sounds about right. Can you get them in a bit of a warmer spot? Say on top of your fridge or something? Even just higher up in the room should be warmer. I keep mine on a shelf at the top of my room.

Well, I know that higher temperature means higher chance of contamination. Thats probably the main reason I havent done that.
Anyway, since its been getting so cold here I started turning up the heat so hopefully it will speed up the proccess a little bit.

The jars are colonizing nice and slow, still at around 12-16C.
I dont want to risk with contamination so I am not going to use an incubator, but will try it the next time I decide to grow.

Unless your temps are in the 50's I find there is no need to incubate, but if your room is that cold then heat the whole room so from the colonization to fruiting stage they can have a nice temperature, 65-70F is great. I personally don't see a need to go above 70F unless your room is naturally that warm
