ID request - possible subaeruginosa
    #12671111 - 06/02/10 07:58 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

This is my first ever find. There were two patches in the same area, one patch looked fairly young and I'm certain they are subs, the others look like subs but they're old and have bruised like banana skin so I'm not too sure. Here are the photos of the latter:

I'm making some spore prints now but theyre coming along slowly so I'll leave them over night.

They look like P. subaeruginosa to me. Just make sure that they all bruises blue.

I have seen that pattern on the caps before, its just the way that they have dried out.

Subaeruginosa, albeit a little bit mottled. I'm 90% positive, but take spore prints this time around before eating them - Let them print for 12-24 hours, and check the colour - Spore print should be a purpley brown.

+ Double check for blue bruising on each one

Congrats! :mushroom2:

Some of them have hints of blue bruising and others are bruised too brown to tell. Guess I'll have to get a print of each one

I'd say you have it, but follow msanchez420's advice.

Some of these have a ring and according to wikipedia the stem should be bare. Can subs have a ring?

I have never seen P. subaeruginosa with an annulus, but many of those do seem to have one.

There are also some differences in the cap and stem coloration.  The dark spots on the caps are most unusual.

Perhaps this is something from section Stuntzii, which would make this a rare and interesting find.

Some do look like P. subaeruginosa though.

Subs don't have rings around the stem. Maybe some do, but it must be very rare because I have never seen or even heard of it. So since a lot of these have rings, I would say they might not be subs.

Personally I wouldn't chance it. When in doubt, etc.

You are being too conservative.  They are definitely active Psilocybes.  But maybe rare ones.

OP, don't eat all the specimens of the type collection!

How many is an acceptable consumption

I made a few spore prints of the ringed ones to make sure they were the same colour as the others. Theyre all drying out now but I did take a photo of one if that helps:

That plus some gill fragments. Send them off to Alan and Workman. You could be onto something rare there.

Could the ring actually be a heavy partial veil remnant?

Here's a recent find that shows similar (pic 2).
