Iraqis Call Shuttle Disaster God's Vengeance

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Immediate popular reaction in Baghdad on Saturday to the loss of the U.S. space shuttle Columbia and its seven-member crew -- including the first Israeli in space -- was that its was God's retribution on Americans.

"We are happy that it broke up," government employee Abdul Jabbar al-Quraishi said.

"God wants to show that his might is greater than the Americans. They have encroached on our country. God is avenging us," he said.

Car mechanic Mohammed Jaber al-Tamini noted Israeli air force Colonel Ilan Ramon was among the dead when the shuttle broke up shortly before its return to earth.

"Israel launched an aggression on us when it raided our nuclear reactor without any reason (in 1981), now time has come and God has retaliated to their aggression," Tamini said.

Scumbags

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

The Iraq-thought-We-Deserved-An-Exploded-Shuttle
story was inevitable, obviously. But I would have
thought they could have found some better people
to quote. A government employee and a car mechanic!

Now now now, remember the their children!

Let's all hold hands and begin our magic mantra to unite the world:

"The Children The Children The Children"

Yes, they grow up and become men like Abdul Jabbar al-Quraishi and Mohammed Jaber al-Tamini.

Sounds like they took a lesson from Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell. I didn't know they was preaching over there.

So true. I laughed when I saw the car mechanic. That's like going to a truck stop in Arkansas to get political analysis.

The man on the street is a better source of public sentiment that the head of a country. Don't discount that. From those two sources I guess the media wants us to think this is what the Iraqis think of it.

I think they need to check their God out a little more closely, but that's just me.

Why don't you leave religion out of this huh??

Not only that accident has nothing to do with God, but you guys actually comment upon this?!
Definitely, you are not better than they if you start talking about it.

Yeah well, we all have opinions. You know what they say about those don't you? That would be your opinion too.

As you know, religion is very present in every day's life in Iraq.
Suppose some earthquake happens in Iraq, then just listen to an american priest.
He might say that God punished Saddam and his country.

This is wrong in both ways.

I don't see it that way. Doxa, the Greek word for opinion, means that which is not known with certitude. Are you claiming certitude for any of those categories? I hope not.

Well, for example, our opinions on politics might be different, so we have to defend them with arguments and facts.

Now, how can you defend your personal beliefs, like religion?!
If the guy believes in angels, that's personal and has nothing to do with other people.

I totally agree. That's why I brought up Falwell and Robertson. Except they blamed their own country for 9/11. These idiots are blaming us, which is not their own country. I see a small difference there. Of course I am sure some Muslim religionists might blame Iraq if the war goes badly saying they have turned from their God and that's why they lost. Which they undoubtedly will, lose that is.

No country has the monopoly on idiots.

As I said before, religion is important in Iraq. It affects everybody, from the simple street person to a government employee. It seems that iraqi politicians are more religious than the american ones, that's all I'm saying.
I wasn't talking about american politicians being priests!?
I was simply saying that you should ask a very religious person about, let's say, an earthquake in Iraq. They might say that god punished them.

edit: i forgot a sentence.

Ahh I see what you are saying. Well, actually there are philosophical arguments for angels and other "beliefs". It is just that most people are unaware of them and just cling to whatever they are taught.
