Psilocybe cubensis was formerly known as Stropharia cubensis as it was named by the American Mycologist F.S. Earle in 1904 after finding it growing on a bagasse pile while living and working in Cube. Because it bared a close superficial resemblance to Stropharia with its relatively large size, well-developed annulus, and dark spores the name Stropharia cubensis held till the 60’s. By then most Mycologist started viewing It simply as a large-size example of the bluing Psilocybe and not a true relative of Stropharia.

Edited to indicate an American and not French Mycologist as listed in the old mushroom field guild from the late 60's I was abstracting from. Oops such is life!

But the stupid shit is usually taken down pretty quickly (and a comparison with Britannica found Wikipedia to be more accurate).

Should you use it as a primary source? Obviously not, it's an encyclopedia. Is it fine for quick and dirty researching? Absolutely.
