5/30 Ovoid hunt - TI for an ID?
    #12657078 - 05/30/10 05:43 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I went back to the same place where I found a suspected ovoid yesterday and discovered an area of about 100 sq meters with a dozen caps. Please let me know if one of these ...or all ... is not an ovoid.

:cool3: I have been searching for these for the last 2-3 seasons. All of these were within 50 meters of a stream, and most were growing in sandy soil beneath tall grasses.

This species has been reported in central VA and as far east as NJ, so it should be established in MD by now. I haven't been hunting long enough to say whether they are rare or not.

In the last two pics #3 on the top row and #3 on the bottom row (same shroom) looks a little different from the others. It was younger... same species?

Yeah, they all look like Ovoids to me.  On the question whether they are rare or not, I have found them to be quite common.  That is if you are looking in the right habitat first.  When hunting near rivers, Ovoids are definitely the most prolific species I find.  I live in Central Va and I usually find them growing up from underneath the sand in a nice cool shady spot.  Me and my bud recently found a few O's fresh in tall thick grass near a river.

Nice find!
