Iffyisiffy said: Hi, I'm new to the whole world of mushroom cultivation but the thought of doing this has been in consideration for months. For two weeks, all I've really been doing is seeing the different methods of cultivation and I'm finally persuaded to do this.
Anyways, I just ordered B+ spores from Sporeworks; I hear it's a hardy strain that's good to work with for beginners. I also came across the PF Tek growing guide a few times but saw the modified version, titled PF Tek V2; which I found exclusively on this site. It doesn't seem too hard with the sole exception of sterility.
My first issue is incubation conditions. Searching through the forums, there's a constant debate about whether or not jars should be kept in an airtight container. A few days ago, I saw a grower simply put the jars in a box, in a garbage bag, on top of his fridge. So what happened to the humidity and temperature issue?
Forget the temp issue, considering the wide range of workable temp, but what about humidity? What if I'm working with a mini fridge, how concerned should I be with humidity, I thought the jars are self sustainable with their own source of humidity...On top of that what about gas exchange? How do you go about exchanging gas in an airtight container such as a fridge? Why did this grower video do a leave it and forget it method? How come that ended up working out?
So confused. For a moment, I thought I had everything ready, I pretty much have all the supplies I need besides BRF (shopping on Sunday isn't great during the late hours when everything's closed), but then I realized i had some info issue. I really want to use my empty fridge though, I'm just concerned about the humidity/ gas factor.
Incubation is indeed useless. Get a space heater if it's cold in your region. I've successfully cultivated Tropical species of mushroom in environments that get -30F regularly.
Let your jars colonize in the open. Humidity is self sustained inside the jar as well as high c02 levels. If you prepared your jars correctly, they should not be air tight and sealed. You need some kind of filter to allow gas exchange while preventing contamination. http://www.mushroomvideos.com/Grain-Preparation In that video there is a jar preparation section to lead you in the right direction.
Personally I wouldn't use that mini fridge for anything. Seems like it would just end up being a hassle.

You can take seriously, anything said by someone, with a rating like Dancefloor's.
You'll come across all kinds of kinks and flaws in your work when it comes to this hobby....once you really get into it and I'm talking 6 months to a year or more, you'll have seen every type of fucking problem in the book, and if you see none, then you know, that you know, what you're doing.
I love this shit, though....most fun I've ever had in a hobby
