dish sterilization

I'm eager to continue my experimentation with agar but the only petri dishes I have on hand are some plastic disposable ones, and they have been used. Is there any reason why I should not use bleach to sterilize these dishes for re-use?
They melt in the PC.

Positive. I wrapped two of them in aluminum foil and PC'd for 50 minutes at 15 PSI. When I unwrapped them afterwards I found shriveled blobs of plastic.

bleach is kinda "sticky". I've been told the best way to rinse bleach is to use alternating hot/cold running water (seems to work for me). because of the "stickiness" factor I'd recommend that you get a dish and fill it with alcohol and just soak them in there (that is what I do, works well), the alcohol evaporates just fine.

Good suggestion... how long do you soak?

that really depends,... greatly. sometimes as long as 3 weeks . i'd say anywhere from 36-48 hours would be sufficient (1 hour is probably good but better safe than sorry, right?)

After washing with bleach use a dilute water and vinigar rinse. This cutes through the bleach film that was left after sterelization.

sorry if this sounds too obvious, but have you tried just boiling or the microwave ? another thought, you could wipe bleach residue out with an isopropyl tissue in the glove .
