Absolutely Groundbreaking TED Talk on Cancer and Angiogenesis
    #12638137 - 05/27/10 12:07 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Title pretty much says it all:

tl;dw:

Most of us have harmless micro-cancers in our bodies.
These only become dangerous when they get a blood supply, IE when new blood vessels grow towards them and start feeding them.
This guy does angiogenesis research, IE research into the growth of blood vessels, and the kinds of foods which affect this process.

Basically, the right foods really can prevent cancer, and not only that, they fight obesity too.
That's an oversimplification, but this guy has really taken a huge step towards understanding what mechanisms are at play in the process.
This is literally the future of medicine.

Wait, WHAT???? Diet affects health?  Who would've thunk it?  Reminds me of a study I read about a few years ago.  Scientists had a group of people eat what they believed our ancestors ate: berries, nuts, lean meat, some red meat.  And guess what the conclusion was.....they lost weight and were generally healthier than when they started!  Shocker!!!

--------------------
Did he dream about dragons? Did he dream about deer? Did he whisper  he names of friends who were near?
What songs did they play, and how far away? Why did he whisper, why did she scream?
What does the sound of a screen door mean?
Who talks on the hill? Who goes to the cellar, can you feel the chill? Where does the river, when will the wind?
How far are the mountains? Where do they end? Why would the church?
Did the service begin? Tell me who died, and tell me who cried.
Help me hide in the skin of a deer, my zippered-up bag in the mouth of a stag so swiftly I go through rows of does,
it flows, it flows, it flows, it flows all over the hill where the green grass grows.

This is one of the most fascinating videos I have ever watched.

Although I had known that cancer was caused by abnormal cell growth, I had no idea how cancers started or how they restricting blood supply might serve to stop “angiogenesis” so that cancerous tumours would fail to stop. I also did not know that tiny cancers might actually be harmless!

The point about how to deal with diet and whether one can “eat to starve cancer” is also very interesting. The fact that naturally occurring compounds have been suggested to contain cancer is not surprising when one finds that cancer has been rarer among primitive people. (I remember reading Nathan Pritikin as a child on this issue, but this explanation is much more interesting and agree much more with what I have learnt about pre-agricultural people.)
