Grow closets, humidity, and air exchange
    #1265461 - 01/31/03 12:06 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

A friend of a friend is setting up a grow closet like the one shown in the picture. She is going to be using a vicks cool mist humidifier for humidification. On the inside of the closet will be a shelving system, with either three or four shelves. She has estimated that the closet will hold up to 10 casings in baking pans. She is wondering if filling the closet to its capacity with casings will have any negative effect on the humidity level or air exchange. While she has planned on putting the humidifier on the outside of the closet (connected with a plastic tube) so that air exchange is accomplished, she is not yet sure if this method will get the humidity to where it needs to be. Because of this she is considering putting the humidifer on the inside of the closet. Are there any disadvantages to this?

Will she experience any problems with the cool mist and maintaining the correct humidity? She has heard that running the humidifier 24/7 is fine, but she wants to avoid having to change the water every two days, and may put it on a timer.

Again, the main question is, are there any problems with filling up this grow closet with as many casings as can fit on the shelves? Are there any qualitative differences between the different shelves - are ones that are up higher different from ones that are down on the bottom?

Thanks!

my friends mom has one of these excellent setups too, humidity will be fine as long as theirs about half dozen or more oven tray sized casings, two times a day air exchanges done manulally will be more than sufficient.. try searching archives for more info on these closet - storage type setups...

yes. there is a recomendation tha there be at least 5:1 air to substrate ratio in a growing environment. the purpose is to allow complete circulation of the fresh air and even dissipation of gasses. it is also to allow enough temprature regulated air to surround the susbstrate thus allowing temperature controll over the sustrate itself. this 5:1 figure is really aimed at larger scale cultivation but the principal is the same.

it makes sense since CO2 is heavier than fresh air that
[edit: ok i found the thread i was thinking of, but it's really not that helpful. might want to check anyway.
