Jars stopped growing!
    #1265329 - 01/31/03 11:29 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I have three jars who were going great for maybe a little more than three weeks. Then, we had this bad cold-front come through and the mycellium just seemed to stop growing! Its been maybe 2-3 weeks since and the jars are almost fully colonized except for a little (maybe 1/3-1/2 inch) section on the bottom of each jar. I even marked on the jar with a marker where the mycellium stopped growing to assure that it was not just me and they have yet to show any signs of growth . I had a friend tell me to put them in the fridge for an hour and then pop out the mycellium into my fruiting area and then they should stop growing, but he is not a reliable source. Any help would be much appreciated!

If its the bottom of the jars that are not growing anymore then it might be because of CO2 buildup. You could try unscrewing the lids of the jars a bit or turning the jars upside down.

I'd recommend the upside down trick, it's worked really well for me. My jars stalled, I turned them upside down, and within 2 days they were at 100%. Also, do you have the holes taped? If so, it would probably be a good idea to remove the tape now to increase your air exchange.

well the holes are covered but the jars are currently hidden in one of those standing lockers (like at highschools) that I borrowed from our local old people home for safety reasons and I am thinking it may be a risk for contams. would thoroughly cleaning the locker they are in and then swabbing the inside with alcohol remedy this or is it even a big risk in the first place?

Three weeks? Kinda long. What substrate recipe did you use? What type of environment do you have your jars in?

I recommend building an incubator for MUCH faster growth: http://www.fungifun.org/pf/incubator.htm

Yeah, environment is a bit cold; my parental unit believes in saving money so we hardly ever run our AC.  I never really cared muchabout the speed which they grow so i never built an incubator or nething     oh, and I use verm and brf (pf-tek) as substrate

just so you know, the longer they take to colonize the higher the chances of contamination. just so you know.

i have actually found that Heating the jars up to about 75 degrees seems to work wonders...this could just be the newbie grower in me spouting b.s. but mine seems to have increased dramatically in rate of growth. I used a simple light with a 30 min. interval timer to keep it from getting too hot..

p.s. it would also be a good idea to tape up any places where light comes out so that they (parentals) can't see any light coming out and decide to go snooping around...

hey jose, you think that was dramatic try upping the temps to like 83 or 84 but be very careful not to go any little bit over that.

should they be flipped back over after they start growing again or let them grow the rest of the way upside down?  because i read that mushrooms will grow in the orientation there mycellium does and i dont want a section of my jars to sprout strained mushrooms

They *probably* won't sprout unless pinning conditions are added, i.e. light, temp drop, humidity

you know what i do to my jars every now and then? i pop the freshness indicator button in the middle of the lid like 30 times. im pretty sure each time i do that and the lid pushes in and pops back out it pushes out a little old air out and sucks a little new air through the filter

no im asking if i should finish the mycellium growing phase upside down or flip them back over.  i know they have to be taken out, dunk and rolled, and all that good stuff to pin

Once you flip them over, don't flip them back upright. Just leave them upside down until 1 week after 100% colonization. Then take them out and do the dunk and roll. 1 flip only. The reason for this is once you flip the jar you have disrupted the dry layer of verm on the top (this is your filter from contams) If you flip it back over you might have some Contam spores or what not (that where on the layer of verm) fall into your cake and contaminate it.

Hope that answers your question.

Cheers,
Drev
