Appropriate Imuplse Sealer
    #1264734 - 01/31/03 08:37 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

SWIM has been using myco bags for a while, but hasn't had the luxury of an impulse sealer. Instead, SWIM has been duct taping the bags when he takes them out of the pressure cooker. This is, of course, rather tedious and obviously far less effective than using a proper impulse sealer. The reason SWIM has been doing this is because the sealers that he has come across have been priced very steeply - something like $100. Besides ebay, where could SWIM find a decent sealer - like the kind he's seen reccomended by workman? Something that will make a perfect seal and not just make holes in the plastic?

Thanks for the help!

Also , what material are the bags made out of, and what is their thickness? I'm trying to figure out the appropriate setting for the timer on the hypothetical impulse sealer.
Would an 8" sealer be sufficient, or might it be just slightly too small as to be a complete waste of money?

Taken from sporeworks:

Thanks.

My sealer is 8" and works fine for the medium sporeworks bags.

i have no experience with bags so i may be totally off here, just using my grey matter... seems like you could use a tape measure and tell if an 8" sealer will "reach". if not try making two seals at an angle acros the top like so: /\ . You should be able to to do about a 13-14 in "reach" with an 8" sealer depending on the angle.

sorry I didn't mention this - my friend did measure, and the bag is exactly 8" across the top.  She figures that means an 8" model would be fine, but couldn't help but wondering if it's actually 8" or almost 8"

What about the $7.99 Eurosealer?

http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=11351115&

Any good reason why this wouldn't work?

Eurosealer sucks. One, not adjustable for varying bags (thickness, material, if the bags wet, dry etc all affect sealing time/setting). Two, doesn't seal all at once, in other words, you have to know how fast to move your hand, and do so steadily across the whole bag. Three, only works for a few bags before it needs new batteris.

And reason four, shop around, I got a 12" impulse sealer from ebay for $15 or $20.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

Why dont you want to use Ebay? I got my 16" impulse sealer for $65 shipped. Best investment I ever made, I use it for all kinds of things. Impulse Sealer
Other than Ebay, I have never found one with a decent price tag, and I searched for a couple weeks before going with the seller I linked above.

OH OH I have an idea, save yourself $50-$100 and go buy a Iron from the D.I. or savers or some other second hand store.
An iron works great for the job, you just have to find the right setting to melt the plastic together without melting through the plastic. But considering you can use one or two spawn bags to do this you just just spent $3 for the iron and 2 dollars for the bag(s). Not bad IMO. And dont tell me it doesnt work because I have done it ane the seals made with a iron held better than factory seals on my bags.

I do sorta the same thing when my sealer doesn't do the job correctly. I like how you folded it though and made sure nothing could fall into it. Otherwise, an 8" sealer will work on those bags. Just do a couple tests on one bag first to get a sense of what setting will be best to seal it completely. I had to do this many times before I found out that level 5 on the sealer was perfect. Good luck.

Why I also prefer folding to sealing(since I do have a sealer too) is that one can reuse the bags this way many times.
