Balance
    #12635392 - 05/26/10 10:58 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

So after doing yoga for an extended period of time, I decided to gauge changes in balance by doing a handstand. I set down a blanket, pressed my forehead against it, bent my arms and then lifted one knee at a time up to rest near the 90 degree angle @ my elbows. This felt extremely balanced, so I extended my legs to be perpendicular to the floor. I was able to do this with minimal difficulty and held the position for a 20 count before releasing.

What intrigued me about this, was the concept of balance itself. What differed from prior handstands where I would lean or tilt one direction or another and require much more strength to hold towards center? What allowed such little effort this time? Why was I much more centered?

I'm hoping others have some ideas as to what balance is, but I'll throw a starting remark out there. It seems that part of what allowed for less effort was the sensitivity to movement. Through practices that focus on body sensations, I've become much more attuned to the finer sensations. So when balance shifted even just slightly, I was able to detect it and adjust accordingly. Before, it seems as though it took a bigger shift before I was able to detect that balance was off, and by that point, it took a lot of effort to bring it back to center. So much in fact that I often would over-correct and drift in the opposite direction. With more sensitive detection, I could modify the distribution of weight in much more gentle and controlled ways.

So lay it on me, what's your take on balance? Physical, mental, or otherwise.

Why do you say space is balance[ing]?
I tend to agree, but would you like to expand? :tongue2:

physical balance is easy to achieve with a focussed mind. a focussed mind is harder to achieve if you are surrounded by distraction. (the more you do such a headstand, the easier it will become mind you to do in busy environments, and the longer you can physically hold it as your body gets fit to that position).

That particular position/technique you described one of my favourites. good for doing core exercises to whilst providing stengthening of the neck for harder techniques. Its also a mechanically strong position, and can probably be held till your head turns blue (given good balance) even if you're not that strong and fit, and easy to roll out of if you over extend your legs. Doing leg lifts in the pos can be very beneficial to your abs, back and butt!

I admire street acrobats who can do incredible balancing acts whilst in amongst the busy bustle of a metropolitan area.

I think of balance more like a sense(Like a sense of direction) in combination with body control. If you can determine where your center of gravity is and use your body to make slight changes to keep your center where it is then that is balancing.

Its hard to say, its like every mind comes into balance when it comes into its own space, returns to awareness
In an asana or something its usually just the same thing, returning to awareness and letting everything click into place
Space allows everything & holds to nothing so is naturally balanced

Wow, thanks for the change of perspective!
You have to know what/where center is before you can try and maintain it.

When balance is grounded (balanced is a better word to describe it haha) , physically, mentally and spiritually it will be a lot easier to acheive something physically, your efforts are so concerntrated it makes the taks easier, you are not just concerntrated with your mind though, you are also taping into the spiritual. I think the spiritual is the energy you get to help the mind/body connection.

Good question though, got me thinking!
