Yes, To keep it easy I would mix equal parts, sand, perlite, and crushed rock. With a very small amount of compost mixed in.

For lophs, how much drought can they stand? I've got them at ~10% RH, and I just repotted them with new improved soil thanks to ferrel_human's suggestion.
I'm thinking of not watering for ~2-3 weeks, but these guys always get so squishy and etoliated even within 2 weeks that it makes me want to water them.
So, is there any risk of them dying or being injured due to totally dry soil and no water for 3 weeks?

I'd say you run a greater risk of injuring them or killing them if you water before ~2 weeks, as the roots may not be fully healed and could rot.
They live in the deserts of Mexico and Texas, they'll survive

i had a 9cm koehresii that i cut in half from rot and it sat there as is for 19 months without anything.
like dan said, repotting = dry time

Well the peyote I have my sights and heart set on is called Lophophora Williamsii var. Caespitosa. I'm wondering if anyone has heard of it. I want to get it because it has a ton of buttons and I want to root and graft some of them but I'm wondering about potency. Is this strain known for having mescaline? And does grafting on an inactive species decrease alkaloid content? What about an active species like p.torch? Thanks. Peyotes are beautiful plants and I'll grow it anyway but it would be nice to reward myself and friends with a little ceremony sometime up the road.

Caespitose Lophophora tend to put more effort into producing pups instead of producing mescaline, so many say it is not as potent.
There also seems to be no reduction or addition of mescaline via graft stock.
But keep in mind that grafting seems to be more of an age based thing than a size based thing, so just because your plant is bigger doesn't mean it has the same amount of alkaloids as a plant that was root grown and is that size.
or at least this is all what I've read.

I probably wouldn't regret buying the caespitose though right? Is the difference in potency going to be very noticeable?

I couldn't tell you, I don't worry about those things
I certainly wouldn't regret getting one because I think they're pretty cacti.

Personal out of the loph genus me think the cap is the ugly sister of the bunch. All those little warts brusting out every where. But iam with Dan look at it, touch it, grow it, dont eat it

i have been away 7 days in the south texas oilfields drilling for for your daddies we call exxon mobil.
as for the questions, i own about 30 somethings with grafts included. i have not hat the pleasure of getting them to set seed but i have many of them flower now and its wuite the spectacle. very beautiful.
with the more time i give them they may put out fruits. some of the flowers are still stuck which i believe is a good sign. i think, not too sure on that.
but it certainly is a trip to see how beautiful they are.
right niow there is not much going on in question of growth. it hasn't rained here and its hot as hell down here. they seem to be squatting down and receeding into the ground, as is often seen in the wild.
i'll get some pics going as soon as i finish my morning beer.

Nice thread, should be stickied for such an important plant.
Been off the scene for a while so thought I's show off my 2 show plants:
This is 25-30 years old, see the 3rd Head forming - started this growing season - so stoked!
This is my other pride and joy.
