Thanks, and yes, it's been on its own roots for about a year and is really taking off now as a real plant. It brings me great happiness.

I love when something you've grown still gives you a sense of awe and wonder every time you see it.

Hell yeah man. Been there. :solidnod:

Beautiful lophs P.Zapp!!

Do you have them in 100% rock/mineral medium and feed when you water or is that a top dressing?

I layer the soil, there's a layer of pumice at the bottom for drainage, then a tiny bit of generic cactus mix with added pumice so the bottom of the roots get a little bit of richer soil that hangs onto moisture. Then more pure pumice, and right below the callous from degrafting I have high grade washed horticultural sand, that keeps all moisture away from the old degrafting wound to avoid rot as much as possible. The rocks for the topping are the rest. So it's like, maybe 80% rock with the tiniest bit of soil for the fine feeder roots to settle into, but away from the body of the plant. I feed dilute orchid fertilizer and have the plant under T5 fluoros, probably only 8 inches of space between light and plant.

I suspect that the scaley appearance is caused by the thrips, as I haven't seen any other bugs. I question if I'm giving it too much light, but it doesn't look like the sunburn pics that I've seen. Some of the dried up buds have a slight orange fluorescence  when it is under the red led light, but it doesn't fluoresce under a black light. Am I on the right track, or do you think I have some type of fungal problem?

Firstly, very cool!

Also, look etiolated to me too.

:super: Thanks for the compliment! I honestly feel that it is the ugliest peyote I've seen on this thread. With that said, I'm still in awe by the natural patterns in the folds. I'm sure things will turn around now though. The etiolation should hopefully correct now that it has been repotted, and it is under good light. I added sand on top of the soil mix, and a layer of gravel. Here's what she looks like now:

She's a bit off center because I buried about 3" of peres that was growing at an angle. I want to have a natural look, but a strong root system.

I'm curious if anyone else has battled thrips. I'm just assuming that the scaly appearance is from the pest. I think it has a button or two that have almost a red/orange dried appearance. Some of the tufts have the orange as well. I've looked at it under a high power magnification, and it doesn't look like spider mites. I'm hoping this is also due to the thrips. Any feedback on my afflictions?

Also, I'm curious if it's possible to tell what variety this is. It's not a natural appearance due to the grafting/thrips/etiolation, but I'm curious if it has enough distinguishing traits. This specimen seems to shoot buttons out like crazy. This is my first peyote, but it doesn't seem to grow/look like that similar to the others that I've seen on this board. Even when it was very small, it started shooting out buttons.

It definitely looks like thrips or mites. I use insecticidal soap and dilute white oil. Sometimes I'll mix in some tobacco water too. It should look good in a couple years. Once you get the bugs under control it will etiolate less, all that damage limits the amount of energy its getting from chlorophyll.

I bought it in 2015 as a small seedling. I'm guessing it must have been 3-4 years old at time, so that makes it 6-7 years old.

I had to repot it because that root was pushing the top out of the pot. It is even bigger than the roots of L. koehresi.

Update on my seedlings:

Just repotted these guys like a week ago into a 100% crushed lava rock mix. They seem to like it a lot better than the previous mix of 80% soil/20% perlite and small rock.

Noticed a rapid increase in growth when I put them in soil from the germination container at around 4 months until they hit about 14 months, then I noticed they weren't getting noticably larger and they were also having problems retaining water.

So, figuring the roots were unhappy, I transplanted them into the present mix.

They greened up really rapidly and started taking water just like they were supposed to. Got some burning, some stretching, but all of that happened a long time ago because I live in Michigan which is a terrible state for growing lophs.

Evaluate. Critique. Comment.

I would've buried them deeper if I knew they were going to inflate that much after they got repotted but I guess having them in a bad soil mix where they weren't absorbing the water made me forget how big they were.

Those look pretty good, no need to worry about burying them deeper. As they exit the seedling stage they will begin to pull themselves down into the soil. Using 100% crushed lava rocks I imagine you are using some sort of liquid fertilizer?

Blame the climate if you want, but know that we have posters that live in colder and more Northern climates than you do who grow stunning Lophs.

Im not sure this is thrips damage.
I also have some lophs with this looks and it more seem like some fungus or disease.
I try keep the lophs affected separated with the other ones.
It doesn´t seem to affect other cacti or plants, just lophs.
Im really curious what it is and if there is any cure for it.
I dont see any bugs when study under magnification.
It doesnt seem to kill the loph just make it look bad and maybe grow somewhat slower.
Anyone else know anything about this "Loph disease"???
