so what are people talking about when they say, I ate peyote buttons? right off the cacti? you cant eat raw cacti and dose right?
I know what the pups are but if one can consume a button to "trip" yet it takes a foot or more of san pedro doesnt that prove higher alkaloids in lophs as was being discussed above?
Im trying to understand but I have street crap mixed with legit info thats confusing me.
I just want to grow them and so far this thread is great for cultivation but when someone asks me about the consuming process "ceremony" I would like to know what Im talking about.
They can be eaten raw Pluck out the wool, and throw them in a blender There will be less to have to manage than with san pedro, the average loph will have a higher content than the average SP.
The root can regrow pups when harvested right, and they grow back faster than the original button would have taken.

so when you see pics like this does that mean they did this and it just kept pupping out or is that just a bunch growing in one spot throwing seeds out and spreading?

It could be all of the above Human harvesting or animals grazing, causing regrowth. Some forms do spread by growing pups that put out their own tap roots and easily detach from the parent plant, so they eventually sprawl over an area, whereas typical caespitosa forms might be more of a mound of smaller heads upon heads upon heads.

do you guys know what causes the rust spots on lophs to show up? Is it too much water?
My loph grafted to pereskiopsis, still just a little seedling, is showing a little tiny orange spot on top. It has been well ventilated, and reasonably dry 50% humidity indoors. The pereskiosis base has been wet pretty steady as I didn't think peres liked having dry conditions.
So research says organic soil, which I possibly have, and watering.
Should I wash out the current soil and replace with a cactus mix soil? For all my peres?
Thanks for the help

High humidity for days straight is what does mine in. Meaning rust cancer.
This big one bit the dust due to that crap.

that's... a much bigger loss then mine. brutal. I thought (wrongly) that when they were on peres, they would be more resistant.

Nah,grafted plants are more susceptible to rust, and well really everything, because they've so much water content. Hard grown or degrafted plants have tougher, thicker skin since it grows more slowly and more concentrated alkaloids, plus less moisture to invite rot.

Its was to be degrafted but that was a very wet year. And it went. And went. Til it was gone.

Seems about right.

They seem to be susceptible to disease. A buddy of mine on here had one and tried to graft and graft amd graft until he lost it all. Whats it called 'candy colored'?

That's brutal!
So I decided to do a little surgery and remove the red spots. I've watched a few of my earlier in the winter lophs get this from too much humidity, and even with changed conditions, that red rust kept spreading. So I figured cut it, and even though it might be ugly, at least it will be alive,

I actually tried 4 grafts form this one, because i somehow sensed that those tiny orange spots would have become a big problem later. Too bad i had to do it in october, so nothing took, due my grafting stocks having finished the vegetative period and entering slowly into dormancy (plus my grafting tecnique is till noob). dunno about the name, i got this as "Variegated" anyhow that's definitely more intresting than full yellow/orange/pink variegation

Ouch. That hurts. I've had a couple of grafts die this year on me from a sort of dry rot that spreads steadily and won't respond to what I've tried. Please, people, beware: if it's fungal it will spread and it warrants isolation.
