Not only was it my only option but it is an affordable choice as it is native to my climate. Opuntia is supposed to give good even growth to scion and last a long time as stock. Also the roots are moisture tolerant and frost hardy. Of course my first graft but why not start with opuntia.

Yeah, I wish some of mine would flower. Some of them are getting pretty big too, but no flowers.

Okay so I need some advice, I tried moving some of my lophs into more direct sunlight and all but one took to it well. I have one poor jourdaniana the was badly burnt so I moved it into the shade and it has been a couple of weeks and it has sort of turned into a pile of mush. The roots still seem okay though so should I remove it from the soil and use a sterile blade to cut just above a few scions and let it dry out for a while and hope it will sprout a few pups or is this all just a lost cause. This is my first baby that I have killed and I am feeling remorse about the whole situation. I need some advice here. Thanks!!!

Looks ok to me.
The original areole was damaged at some stage but has since recovered and will continue to grow normally.

I noticed that you have a Loph caesitosa that is flowering... I've read before that it's rather rare for those to flower, interesting...

They flower if the main head gets large enough but generally are rare to see in flower. I know some people pick off the new pups as they appear just so the main head can grow to get them to flower. I have my fingers crossed for my caespitosa to flower this year. The main head is developing wool so with a little luck I could see it flower....maybe.

Awesome thanks for the reassurance. I thought it looked good as well. I can't wait for it to start growing faster.

Sorry bootedboy, I overlooked your post.
It sounds bad to put it bluntly but there is hope if you manage to cut back into healthy flesh and leave one or two areoles for some pups to form. Once you have done the surgery it would be wise to sprinkle the wounds with sulphur powder to help it heal and fight any infection.
I think this is your only option if it is turning to mush and the sooner you operate the sooner you can assess the damage and limit the spread of the rot. Keep us posted and good luck!
