The theory is that they get tired on their own roots and it's imperative to have older Astros and Arios in a proper mineral mix and to not force them by over watering and excess fertilizer. These plants are designed to grow slowly and if pushed too far it weakens them and you have secondary problems like pest problems, rot, infection, senility and eventually death. The best grown plants IMO are slow grown with little fertilizers and enough water to keep them somewhat looking natural.
These plants can be pushed to their limit and can grow relatively fast but once they start to get old I think pushing them while young decreases the longevity of the specimen. This is my theory but I do think the slow and steady approach will ensure that they're in top shape for their twilight years.

well that is exactly how i like mine.
i actually watered mine at the begining of the growing season. you should have seen the skin. it got all wrinkly and in my eyes they hated it.
they out grew it and i did it again. the same thing.
now nature does the watering. thats how it is out in the wild and thats how i'll keep them here.
its only when i do the watering that they seem to dislike it.
too many deaths this year on other plants. just one loph but the other have suffered greatly.
so its survival of the fittest now.

Why don't they have a cactus growery type website, as opposed to the shroomery and the growery

a bit bloated psilocybesolution but nice none the less.
i would hold back on the water.
see this one is hidden. almost as natural as it gets.

since the rain they have been trying to throw seeds. some managed to do so while i was away. i caught this one in time.

my monster with a shitload of pups.

and a blue myrtle pup on this loph crest. i will let this pup get big and propagate the mother.

@ PsilocybeSolution: Nice collection. Are they on their own roots or are most of those grafted?

They're on their own roots, "Hard-grown from seed". I'm lucky enough to have a great vendor nearby. I checked out his cactus club show this year and picked up the Fricii's and the Caespitosa. The Williamsii's I grew myself from seed except for the largest one.
And Dan, I'm ashamed to admit I gave into vanity and added the black fish tank gravel this spring.

Huh. They're very spherical so thought I would ask. They're all nice and you're lucky to have such a good vendor nearby.

@ ferrel: This one is a beast!

i like how that in less than a year, it looks like a super old specimen.
it has the spiracular ribs and all. its a beauty for sure but it has so many pups.
when the rain lets up. i will harvest the big pups, callous them and them root them on their own.

those are perfect for grafting my friend. if you got the stomach for it, and of course the steady hands, i'd say go for it.
