I've probably posted this before, but does anyone have a killer soil recipe? All I have atm is MG moisture-control potting soil. And I might have some verm, perlite, hydroton laying around. Is charcoal or sand necessary?
Maybe someone could just send me some for a trade? I don't want to plant too late.

Anyone think a 50/50 mix of MG Moisture-control soil and sand would suffice for germination?

I figured perlite...just don't have any laying around atm. Might have to finagle some, or...you think crushed hydroton would suffice?

I have "play sand"...is that okay? Also, is sterilization necessary?

Well, I have sown in a domed flat containing equal parts sand/perlite/MGMC soil. It has been quite bright, sunny, and humid lately. Hopefully I will have some success.

My seeds popped!
Some of them look a little reddish. Is this normal? They are outside, in a semi-shaded greenhouse flat. How long do you think I should keep the dome on? I thought I noticed a little tinge of algae in one spot.

Oh yeah...otherwise that little growth on the side might be a problem.

I let the soil dry out a few times. But I've had the tray inside a clear sterilite container the whole time, so it still stays humid. I'm sure it gets hot in there though. They've pretty much been red like that since birth. Too much light?

I figured I'd post an update since everyone else has been adding so many cool pics.

As you can see, I have transplanted my babies from their original flat. It was just too big to be manageable for their current size. I don't know what I was thinking starting in such a large container. I believe this is all of what sprouted, probably not much less than what was sown. They all recovered nicely from the sunburn, and are doing well several weeks after transplanting. I made sure to handle them very gently in the process and not disturb too much soil from their bases. The only challenge I face now is keeping them alive over the winter. I have only north facing windows. Anyone think lighting will be an issue?

About how old should seedlings be before weening them from a high humidity environment? What would be the best way to do this? Would it be advisable or not to do this during the winter, as the air tends to be drier?
