Couple of casing questions.

#1264622 - 01/31/03 06:02 AM (23 years, 8 months ago)

I've read quite a bit about casing over the past few days and have some questions now.

http://www.thehawkseye.com/50-50casing.html

Most of my information has came from the above, and I had intentions of doing the 50/50+.

Anyways, while doing some searches for "Jiffy Mix" and "Bed a Beast" those two started to change my mind.

Are they that much "better" than 50/50+? I'm very new to casing, and couldn't find all of the information I wanted.

1. The First layer, still needs to be 100% vermiculite correct?

2. The second layer, is crumbled up cakes correct?

3. The actual casing layer itself, would be the Jiffy Mix or Bed a Beast correct?

Are the guidelines to using the Jiffy/Bed a Bad the same? Such as regarding humidity, colonization, and harvesting?

For the correct humidity during harvesting, would transfering the casings to separate container with just a jar of perlite be sufficient? I understand a straight up layer of Perlite is a no no.

Hope some of you guys can help me out.

Thanks.

my understanding is that jiffy mix is peat, verm and lime which is about the same as 50/50+. i believe bed a beast is coco coir. i have good luck with 50/50+ but many people have good or great luck with coco coir or a coco coir/verm mix.

no. i use 50/50+ on the bottom as well. i used damp perlite on the bottom before also. really a matter of preference, imho.

or sliced cakes or whatever the substrate is. i use bird seed these days.

yes, the top layer as far as i understand is the "true" casing layer.

i would say yes.

i always say: whatever it takes to make the humidity right. you have to measure it, you shouldn't guess. and i have seen at least one person extolling the virtues of a straigth perlite *casing*, so it can be done and at least in one case is the preferred casing material.
