to breath or not to breath
    #1263967 - 01/31/03 12:54 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

Lets say someone innoculated some jars 2 weeks ago and said person now has many jars of growing mycelium, should the lids to those jars remain tightly sealed or should they be loosely fitted to allow for "breathing"? It seems as though I read that the mycelium require CO2 while the actual fruit bodys need oxygen. Help is greatly appreciated.

My advice is to leave them sealed until the mycelium takes hold, then leave them open for air exchange, until full colonisation.
A lot of people leave them off for the whole incubation process. I have had success with leaving them sealed, so there is no correct answer.

i've always left them cracked open to breath through the whole process, haven't had any probs with contams. There are about 3 safetys in the sterilization anyway, you'll be working clean, you'll have a lid with tape over the holes, a layer of dry vermiculite, and a layer of tin foil over all that....so i doubt contaminates stand much of a chance, and it's more important for me to have them breath.
