IMO Silicone is the better choice. The injection hole is closing very nice. It is cheap and you can make big or small injection ports with it.

Just
I'd go with RTV silicone self healing injection ports. Why?
No wait on shipping, can be bought at any local hardware store or HD or Lowe's.
In fact I will be using RTV to make self healing injection ports in my quart jars.

Here is the other one. I would have done this if I had the ports oh-hand. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11487687
the second tek looks sweet!
do the ports seal 100% after inoculation etc, how long do they last?
are these any good...

Use RTV unless you are going for a certain neat 'look' with your jars.
Either way, you are going to have to use silicone, either to make the injection port, or to seal in the rubber stopper....

The stoppers will have a more professional look to them and are slightly easier to inject, but the silicone is probably the best bang for your buck.
Plus the stoppers usually require 1/2" holes, which can be a pain to drill in many lids (especially plastic). Where as you can do 1/4" or smaller with silicone and have no issues.

those stoppers do require 1/2 inch holes. they pop in a little tight, but thats what you want.

RTV is quick, easy & inexpensive. About any hardware or autoparts store has it. So, it's a available right now about anywhere. But looks ghetto.
RTV doesn't stick to plastic (PP5) lids all that well. But, sticks to metal lids real well.
Best ports I have ever found are the silicone type that come on vacutainers (orange/red looking ones). They are thick & will last 100 punctures. But, are very difficult to find.
Small grey 8 mm rubber ports are good also, but not as thick & last 7 to 10 punctures.
Plastic lids are easy to drill, if you have a good drill & bits. I have a small table top drill press & never had issues drilling lids.

I agree. Just cause someone is being thrifty doesnt make them necessarily a beginner. Why spend so even 10 dollars on pre made injection ports when you can buy a tube of silicone for 4 dollars and make as many as you want.

Definitely not but once again it comes down to the cash. I built a GB for about 15 dollars and a flow hood is gonna cost me several hundred. I know that it is an investment but sometimes cheaper is better. And a flow hood doesnt even compare to self healing injection ports.

Same function, less money.
Flowhoods are worth it. You can't RTV a filter to a fan and get the same function

I prefer the ports because they look neat and professional. They run about 12 cents a piece so they're not really more expensive then silicone.
They will wear out eventually, especially if you use like gauge needles (14g or lower will eat holes in them) but using 16g or higher can withstand quite a few pokes, easily 30+
Once they begin to wear out you can put a little blob of silicone in to repair them.
Drilling holes is super easy as long as you use the proper tools.
I use a $25 drill from lowes and a 1/2" forstner style drill bit. Each jar gets 2 holes one for a port one for a tyvek filter patch. Takes about 3-5 minutes to drill 24 holes then 15 minutes to apply the patches and insert the ports. I use a little dab of silicone to make sure the port is sealed good. A couple qtips cut in half make excellent silicone applicators. It's easy to just keep the jars in the case so they hold still.
Be careful not to get it on your hands as the curing agents can cause a severe allergic reaction (similar to poison ivy, but worse). So keep the crap off your hands and wash up afterwards.
Now for spawn bags, just use plain silicone as the vial ports are not suitable.

I am “frugal”. But, it pays to purchase quality. Not to mention looks better & lasts longer.
As far as injection ports go, when 1 wears out, you simply replace it. Pop it out & slide in another.
First PC I ever bought was a used AA 925. In 15 years, never a problem with it.
I graduated up to an AA 941 sterilizer & a 24X48 flow hood. Again, no issues with a lot of use over many years.
It took me awhile to find the source. But when I did I bought a thousand plastic lids for $150 1K was the minimum order. That is 0.15 cents a lid.
I enjoy the tinkering.

The Kerr/Ball storage lids leak liquid & are not meant to hold a vaccum. The ones I bought do not leak liquid & will hold a vaccum. (without a filter on a lid, meaning I could use them for canning) Mine are better than FungiPrefecti's. I ordered some from Stamets & was not impressed.
