Memorization skills...hows yours?
    #1262622 - 01/30/03 05:38 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Just wondering how many of you commit long stories or poems to memory? I have been doing it since I was a child. My grandfather used to tell me poems as a kid and by the time I was in grade school I started learning some. My favorite poet is Robert Service. I have about 20 of his works memorized. And I have many others from various poets as well as a lot of originals that I have written all locked away in my head.

I have reached a point that I could sit around a campfire and start telling poems and continue uninterrupted for several hours (although I never would actually go on that long). And the poetry I tell is mostly ballad style stuff. The kind of poems that tell stories and don't require lots of heavy thought. Those are the best kind for fireside sessions (IMO).

I have found that people are amazed to hear you ramble off a 10-15 minute piece of poetry without missing a beat. They say "Oh, I could never do that!". But the truth is this, each one of us has memorized a lot more than we believe. Just think of all the songs you can quote the lyrics from. Thats nothing but poetry set to music. I have just chosen to focus my memorization efforts on poetry. Anyone who had dedicated as much time to it as I have could do the same.

It was common to have 'poetry sessions' at my family reunions. But I'm just curious, outside of my own family I've never met anyone who put so much effort into memorizing lengthy amounts of poetry. Has anyone here ever gotten into this as a hobby? Can any of you ramble off a 15 minute piece of prose on demand? Surely I'm not alone in this one!

You invented the wheel....You push the motherfucker!!

Well... I don't have any poems memorized...at least I don't think.. I'll have to check the archives.... nope only a couple.. random stuff..

But if you count my own poems, I have them all memorized. Probably about 100 or so. Also the songs that I play with my band. Memorizing speed metal and poetry that goes over top of it...does that count?
