    #1254905 - 01/28/03 07:42 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

since i am still virgin to the experience but interested in affecting it, can you all give me your opinions or techniques on how to make good psychedlic/tripping music? like words, phrases, artists, types of sounds, the way you respond to sounds and sound types etc.

thanks!

Buy both Shpongle albums and listen to them about an hour into a mushroom trip for all the resources necessary to understand psychedelia in audio production.

In one word, your music would have to be: Epic

I don't know quite how to describe this to you, and would suggest you try some magical fungi for yourself and find out.

The alltime best music for tripping in my opinion is Cinema Strange.

Well since people are more onto naming artists/groups rather than a particular style that defines good trip music, I'll offer up Cinemaphonic. Though it's difficult to come by their music, they play jazz/soul and it just has the greatest vibe for when you're trippin'

Try something different and try to make your own sound. Don't try to fit into a catergory or sound like a particular artist. I used to try to make trance, but I ended up making experimental/intelegent/ambient tracks instead.

If at all, try not to use that same old techno beat. I'm so fucking sick of that!

me and my band are trying to develop our own sound... we are gearing towards a heavier distorted sound but with interesting dynamics.. i like to think of it as Shroom-Core
i caught glimpses of the sound when we tripped and jammed last week... it sort of reminded me of trance but only done by a band rather than a synthesizer.

when the mood of the music is ________, my response was _____________

etc, something to that effect. thanks all!

It's kinda hard to catogorise music like that, as each time you hear it, it might give you a different vibe, or it just might be too hard to try and describe it accurately.
The best way to know the answers to your questions is test them yourself! Everyone reacts differently to certain music on a trip.
Compile a list of albums that you think would be good for a trip. A good way to test if they MIGHT be good on trips, is have a nice, big smoke up and listen to the album in the dark. Once you've picked out what you think are the best for your trip, then just go for it.
Anyways, I'll give it a shot :

Godspeed You Black Emperor! - very moving, epic, orchestra style rock. songs are around 15 - 20 mins long, and consist of different compositions and pieces/songs into one whole track. quite thoughtful music, very beautiful, a slightly depressing vibe, but it's the kind of music that could move you to tears. great for if you want your trip to have a very epic, thoughtful trip.

Shpongle - interesting, original, unpredictable, psychedelic as fuck! techno, but certainly not even able to be classed as techno. goa is probably the closest you could call it. use of lots of different eastern instruments, incorporated into electronic music. very soundscapy at times, and throws sounds and noises that you didn't think were possible. the first album is good for a spiritual kind of trip, the second slightly the same, but more upbeat.

Shalabi Effect - a recently new band I have discovered. quite diverse in their music. very psychedelic, use of different instruments, more eastern style instruments in here, some really mindfuck style songs, and others are much more uplifting and upbeat. good album to drag you down through the warped bits of your mind and also lift you up again. haven't tried it on a trip yet, but I can imagine that it would be quite a ride.

Tool - Lateralus - The other albums aren't really as trip friendly as this. Aenema can be quite interesting on trips, but Lateralus seems to tap more into the psychedelic experience. the lyrics are positive, uplifting and at times can be applied to psychedelics. a nice variety of styles - at times a quite dark, twisted and warped, then at other times very moving, psychedelic Floyd style pieces that can really put a huge smile on your face. the kind of album that goes through lows and highs, a rollercoaster ride, if you will. first time I tried this on acid, I got very good results. now it's currently one of my all time fav trip albums. good for spiritual/thoughtful/uplifting trips.

Pink Floyd - well, quite hard to try and put these guys into a category. each album has an entirely different tone/feel/vibe to it, and it's a matter of choosing which album works best for certain kinds of trips. Ummagumma is a very spacy, psychedelic, bizarre headtrip album. Dark Side of the Moon is a sort of upbeat, slightly psychedelic rock album, with plenty of moments that compliment a good trip. Meddle is a mostly psych rock style album, ending with a 22 min masterpiece that explores most areas of what Floyd are capable of.

It's quite tricky trying to put this to words, but my suggestion is just explore. Try things that you wouldn't even have thought about trying. Sometimes the most unexpected album turns out to be one of the best for tripping. Try and compile your own list and see what vibe/feelings you get from listening to certain bands and then decide what kind of trip you want and pick albums from one or some from every type of vibe. Don't be afraid to try out stuff that you're a little cautious about. If it doesn't work during an experience, you can always change the CD and try again later, or another time.

Pink Floyd.

You can never go wrong with Pink Floyd. Their songs will take hold of your trip.
