What is the evolutionary reason mushrooms have psilocybin???
    #1261825 - 01/30/03 12:51 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Why, over the course of time, would mushrooms evolve to contain psilocybin?? From a self-preservation standpoint it makes no sense. It isn't a poison, and I'd figure most animals would enjoy eating it (in small amounts) and would probably hunt out mushrooms rather than avoid them. Any ideas?

Go to this Terence Mckenna link and download the mp3 called 'Food of the gods'
This will explain everything you want to know.

my guess would be to keep animals from eatting them all.
I can see a animal eatting a few but after it started triping i don't think it would really understand what was going on.
It would prob do as anyother animal that is sick would do and lay down and try to sleep it off or eat grass untill they puked.

thats just my guess.
Funny part is i was triping the other night and the same ? poped n my mind

are mushrooms toxic to any animals?

Doesn't seem to work like that. In mescaline containing cacti the young cacti - the ones most likely to be eaten by animals have little to no alkaloids. The older the cactus gets the more mescaline it contains. If alkaloid production was about deterring animals the younger plants would contain the most.

Natural selection... primates being the selectors.

Primates benefitted from eating them, and the mushrooms benefitted from the resulting spore distribution.

my two cents

Do mushrooms really need help from animals for spore distribution? Isn't the wind adequate?

> Do mushrooms really need help from animals for spore distribution?

The animals provide significant benefits.  Alot of the spores are "stuck" onto the mushroom, a large force dislodges them: being stepped on, knocked over, bitten, picked, etc.  When eaten, the spores travel in the guts and grow in poo.

> Isn't the wind adequate?

If it's windy.

yes, but isn't primate poo not optimal for mushies? Don't they prefer cow poo?
