PC's use pressure to make the water boil at a higher temp, but it's steam that heats the jars. The pressure just makes it a hotter steam. Or at least thats how I thaught it worked.

Pressure cookers are better by far, only use steam method if you dont have a PC.

whoever voted for steam method either A: has never used a PC for this purpose or B: had a pitifully small PC and a big steamer and has big PC envy.

My PC has paid for itself a hundred times over in lack of lost jars, ability to use whole grain, and reduced aggravation (probably prolonging my life)!
It's the best, most important investment a mycofile can make.
The second best investment, if you don't have easy access to a stove, it a portable electric range burner.

PC is the best and I agree, superb investment, reduced time, less energy to opperate, if maintained and used by informed user, it's safer....plus, you can cook a meal in it in 1/4 of the time, make jellies and jams....endless possibilities.....
I dont have a stove...just a hotplate.....someone put a kitchen where my bathroom belongs and I have to move it.....not having an oven sux....so I have a flow hood ...10 of them right now......

When I used the PF tek, I had no problems with just steaming my jars for 1 1/2 hours.
When you use grain, you will really need to get a PC however.

i have had 6 jars that came out ok out of about 60, i ruined the 6 from my own stupidity though. steam em for an hour and u should be fine, in the future think about getting a pc, its well worth it. u can do grain and have full colonization in a week

Dont be discouraged, I dont yet own a pressure cooker, Ive prepared about 80 jars and believe it or not, ive never had contamination in my jars, I use a big oval shaped slow cooker, fits 7 half pint jars, inch of water at bottom and steam for 90 minutes. I realize I must be lucky because people with PC's usually arent that lucky. Only thing I can think of that may attribute to my succes is Clorox disinfectant spray. I use lots of it, fog out the room im working in about 15 minutes prior to working with the jars, I dont know, contamination has not yet been an issue for me, worst ive had is some green mold growing on one of my casings, it didnt spread and was easy to kill (Salt on infected area, and h202 water the surrounding area)

I have about a 95% success rate with steaming (BFR cakes). I have also used wheat berries with success, boiled 1hr day for three days.

I've been steaming jars for 6 years now and the only contamination I've had is because of my syringe. If your doing the PF tek, steaming jars for around an hour, maybe a little more, is just fine.

Steamed quite a few jars, only had 1 contam. I use a large "turkey frying" pot and I cover the steam escape hole with tin foil
