A common prob for me (Pic)
    #1259689 - 01/29/03 06:22 PM (18 years, 2 months ago)

I have a problem quite oftem with every 4-5th batch that I put out and I cant seem to put my finger on it

Symptoms:
#1) Mycelium creeping up the stem, not just a little, almost half way. Much like( B) amd (C) in this picture.
#2) Stunted growth. Fruit body will stop growing. Starts turning blue in areas due to stress I think, especialy along the veil line (A)

My guess? I use birdseed, and have heard that it can get pretty dry. Could that stunt the growth, while the higher humidity in the fruiting chamber and casing layer causes the mycelium creeping up the stem? Thats my best guess.

I think your guess is correct on both counts. I have experienced both and dunking works like a charm with the seed cakes.

Try pushing air down from the top of your chamber with a pc fan or what not.
I finaly got mine to stop that creeping up the stem shit. It only took losing 2 good flushes to fig it out.

The mycelium up the stem is related to humidity, not a problem.
The stunted growth is aborted mushrooms, not a problem, pick aborts when you see them stop growing.

Thanks. Reasonable guess, but no, . Theyre the ones that are way past that stage and well on thier way to growing full size, nice and healthy!! when all of a sudden they stop...sometimes theyll get to be monsters, then all a sudden they wont break thier veil and open up...just die!! .Ive been researching a bit, looking at old posts etc.... and I think Ive solved the prob.. Its the dry birdseed substrate, Ill be dunking alot more
. Thanks!!

Well that would be an abort. If it stops growing before making it to maturity(able to release spores) than it's an abort.
