if it wasnt forthe negative connotations that are attached to drugs and drug use, the effect would be positive. but because of the way drugs have been made to appear to the public, the impact has become negative. people view those who have helped themselves through psychoactives as bad people, simply because the have used drugs. remember the uproar with clinton? "i did not inhale"

Negative effect overall.
Positive effect on the arts, philosophy, science (PCR ala a tripping Kary Mullis), media... WAIT! Maybe the effects just aren't all that noticeable... Maybe I don't know... Maybe THE answer to your question does not exist.

The fact is we can never know what the world would have been like without drugs. Besides that, we think with drugs. So without drugs there wouldn't be life on earth. Just for fun though I guess I'll say that drugs have done a lot of good things for society as well as bad things, or more precisely-the way we've dealt with drugs have done these things. Of course the simpler life is the better it is.? Who knows? It's a matter of opinion I guess. All I know is that I wouldn't give up all the drugs in the world for anything.

ILLEGAL drugs don't really impact modern society anymore, just as governments have wanted.
Sorry to go off-topic, but I feel this is quite important, and kind of applies here as a kind of reverse perspective (how modern society has impacted drugs).
I feel the negativity involved with psychedelics in particular plays a giant roll in "bad trips" and people "freaking out" on drugs. They take a psychedelic, and start experiencing something incredible. Something amazing. Then they remember "oh wait... they've been telling me ever since I was a little kid: DRUGS ARE BAD!" and will spend the rest of the trip looking for something bad to freak out about. Its happened to me before, but a dash of self-confidence and some realizations about our modern governmental agendas has taken care of that.
