Ass end of a horse.
Really, it's that easy: find horses, find horse manure.

Edit- no cedar or pine. And not too much urine.
i live in an urban area nowhere near horses ...

There's horses not too far from you, I bet. Almost anywhere.
If you had manure, would you get fresh stuff and make compost? Or would you take the field aged stuff?

i was under the impression that field aged stuff was the way to go for making compost - as long as it contained no cedar chips as they're a natural anti-fungal.

Two different styles of compost- but your way is the simpler of the two.

what about just buying it online - or is it really that easy to find a local place to get it? do i really just walk up to the door of some farm and ask the guy for his horse shit? that seems a little strange to me ...

Here's where I'd look:

Even big cities have stables.
Here's some examples New York City.
Chicago
Horse stables will be glad to give you all the horse shit you want. You may need to let it sit and leech for awhile though if it's fresh.
Another option is coffee. Go into any starbucks style coffee shot with a bucket with a trash bag in it and ask for their coffee grounds. Come back later in the day and pick it up. All the free spent coffee grounds you could want.

Just tell him it's for your garden. I'm sure they wouldn't care. I bet they've been asked a thousand times for manure. Just don't go walking up looking like some burnout. And be polite even if they say no, which they won't. I used to do it all the time. Now I have my own 5 acres which used to have horses on it.

It's incredibly common to use spent coffee grounds and horse manure for garden fertilizer.
My mom just piles the shit up in huge mounds then uses a little tractor to till it into the garden each spring and fall.
They plant a few plants and then just let them do their own thing, no watering or maintenance and even with a relatively small garden (20x20ish) they get so much food they end up giving truck loads to the local homeless shelters and similar places. Get to claim it on their taxes too ;-D
