About to be on house arrest.
    #12605158 - 05/21/10 04:22 PM (14 years, 1 day ago)

I don't know to much about home detention. What I do know is they hook something up to the phone line. In my case that is the cable modem.Phone and internet both come through it. I have heard rumors but nothing for certain yet as to the conditions of house arrest. I heard that while on house arrest you are not allowed to have the internet.

My question is,if this rumor isn't true and I can have the net. Will they most likely be tracking my internet activity since it all runs through the modem. Also even if I can or can't have the internet, with things being hooked up to the modem could they remotely search my computer. From visiting this site and dabbling a bit in the cultivation of certain mushrooms I am sure there are some things on here I don't want them to see. I deleted alot but I know it still stays in certain caches and what not.

Would the most intelligent thing to do be pull the hard drive from my computer while on home detention. If they ask tell them it fried and I haven't had the money for a new one?

Play a lot of video games, make your lady/man comfortable if there is one or more, and keep reading.

Sad shit, but it is what it is. Who are "they", and what are you worried about being "tracked"? Maybe house arrest is more a pain in the ass for those who are presumed to track such things more so than those actually under house arrest?

And what was the charge? Would there be reason to watch your files? Carrot?

They are the sheriffs department, they set up and monitor the house arrest stuff. I was nailed for my 3rd dwi,got a month home detention and 2 years probation out of it. 6 month suspended sentence. While I have no grows at the moment. I may or may not have all the materials around one might need to start a nice little science project. Say they were to snoop on the computer and see that I frequent this site regularly and check out what I am reading about. Could they hit me with some conspiracy to operate a drug factory charges?

There were some things found on the road at the scene. Quite a coincidence but that is all it was. They couldn't stick any additional charges on me. I don't think they were happy about that, could be reason to snoop?

You don't have to worry about them searching your computer via the house arrest box. That box just calls out to their control center a few times a day to report ankle monitor activity. Some of the newer ankle monitors have GPS and two-way communication capabilities.

The police can subpeona the ISP for your browsing history, but depending on the variety and frequency of sites hit, it could be a needle in a haystack. The list they would get is made up of IP addresses, not the web hosts name, so they'd have to have to match all the different IP addresses. So if you are like me, and sit on basically just this site only for 25 hours a day it'd be fairly obvious what your up to. So if you log on once a day, and browse many different sites it'd be much harder to find - there are usually much better uses for online forensics than checking up on random parolee's without reasonable suspicision.

However, if they have reasonable suspicion, they'd probably trace the shroomery's ip and see if any of them match your history. They will only go through all this trouble if they are trying to obtain a warrant to forcefully gain entry, given that they already have you by the balls legally, if they had reasonable suspicion they'd just send a unit to your house to search the place.

So yes, they can browse the history, but generally internet forensics is used for tracking child pornography on a much larger scale - you should be okay. If you live in an apartment, or a condensed neighborhood see if you can find an unsecured connection, or pay off a neighbor to let you use their connection

Also, they can not hack into your computer remotely to mess with your stuff without the use of viruses (which is illegal) or specifically installing a remote access program on your computer. If they want to check out your computer, and probably take a look around for any other evidence they can nail you with

Cool thanks for the responses. Looks like I won't be stressing it to much. Think I'm going to start a shitake grow anyway then I won't have to worry about a thing.

On a side note. The only reason I got 30 days house arrest with 6 months jail time suspended is because I asked for a lawyer and kept my mouth shut! Cop was lying his ass off about different things. Witnesses etc.. Had I been dumb and not known my rights I would be doing a lenghty sentence in prison :themoreyouknow:

Its interesting that they use a cable modem for communication with the sherrifs office.  You can use wireshark to see the contents of the packets.

That sounds silly, I am not sure why they would say that.  Ask your lawyer about it.

It is unlikely that the house arrest box will sniff your traffic.  Technically possible though.  It would be a real good idea to use a VPN or ssh web tunneling so all they can see is encrypted packets.

Only if your computer has security holes.  If you install all the updates (use secunia PSI to see if you have them all), the cops won't be able to use the modem to hack into your computer.

Always use full drive encryption like truecrypt.

No reason to pull it, just overwrite all the sectors and use encrypted filesystems from now on.  If you use debian linux its a standard option during install.

Also remember that if you are on house arrest, they generally let you leave the house to go to work and school.  Get some work or school lined up so you don't have to sit at home all day.

Since you aren't on house arrest yet, now would be a great time to go to job interviews.

Also, if you don't already have this covered, meet some girls now, so when you are on house arrest you can text them and invite them over.

Wow thanks for all those tips. I do have a job and I live above the shop I work in. Even going to work I won't be leaving home. My car is wrecked with no cash to fix it at the moment and my drivers license is gone for a while. Really they are basically wasting thier time with the ankle braclet and monitoring. I wouldn't be leaving the house anyway.

As for the girls coming over ehhh I just broke things off with my girlfriend today. She was quite the control freak. 30 days of work and porn!

No.  It's connected to a phone line, which he just happens to have provided through his cable modem.  So there's no sort of network interface.

To the OP... Don't worry about them sniffing or collecting data from your ISP.  They won't take the time because they don't have to.  Being on house arrest and probation, if they want to they will just send a PO or sheriff over to your house.  They'll come in and look around, perhaps even sit down at your computer and open your browser history to see what you're up to.

If they're more sophisticated they'll bring a U3 thumbdrive which will be loaded with "USB Switchblade" or the like.  It will pull everything of interest from your comp in about 30 secs.  It will grab IPs, browser history, stored IMs, emails, etc., etc..  Google "USB Switchblade" if you're interested.

Just remember that on house arrest/probation they can and might well come in for random pee tests and to look around your place without a warrant.  While you might well be able to force them to get a warrant (if they can), not letting them in will be a probation violation and they'll throw you in jail for that 6 month sentence.  They'll probably search your place anyways "incident to the arrest" for probation violation.  That's usually how probation agreements work out.
