Dont Use Vermiculite in the Microwave!
    #12605074 - 05/21/10 04:06 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

So i was about to do a D&R, since i was at the bottom of the bag i decided to sterilize the verm. ive used the oven b4, but after reading a few post about people sterilizing the verm in the microwave, i decided to try it out. 2 mins on high in a bowl. let cool for an hr and you're good to go.

well this is what happened.

not to mention the huge cloud of smoke and awful smell of melted plastic. ugh. the verm was red hot when i opened the door too. thot id share so everyone can see.

Note to self: If it aint broke dont fix it, and dont try to cut corners.

Don't trust the easy way out. Just stick to the tried and true methods unless you're sitting good and have room to experiment a little.

I've never had a problem as long as the verm is wet/moist.  I micro casing mix sometimes when I'm short on time.

ill try to get the pic larger, im not sure how to resize them. i didnt realize they were that small. most of the verm was still loose, tho some of it melted to the bowl.
yeah i had another bag of verm so figured id give this new tek a shot. lol.
ugh it still stinks like plastic in here.

verm contains iron, aluminum, magnesium and other minerals. Without the water to absorb the energy it'll turn to lava pretty quick.
