Does size matter?

I've only been able to source very fine vermiculite locally. When I was on the west coast I could find a variety of sizes. My last attempt at PF TEK was a failure. It just seemed to stall after a short period of mycelium growth (using fine vermiculite).

I believe fine vermiculite is what is reccomended for the PF Tek and for rolling the cakes in later. If you had a failure it was not the vermiculite.

I think the fine vermiculite is causing my BRF+Verm mixture to become compacted in the jar. Would this make it harder for the mycelium to grow. I'll see if I can get some pictures up later, as I started four new jars on the 18th using fine verm.

I've used all kinds of verm textures. All of them were a success. IMHO, the size of the verm is not an issue. Some may argue differently, but IME when BRF jars stall it's usually because of contams, assuming the substrate was prepared properly.

Yes this can be a problem and it has a lot to do with how you load and handle the jars. When loading the jars just spoon the mixture in, do not tamp it down any at all. You will want to tamp the top surface very lightly just to make it even. I have only ever used fine verm and I have never had a problem. Also be careful with how you set the jars down on the counter and in the pc or what have you, just setting them down hard can compress the substrate a bit.

just pack the jars very loosely, i've used like 6 types of verm. everyone of them are the same when mixed with the BRF mix, they all pack the same way, don't blame the verm, it's not verm's fault lol.

someone should edit this on photoshop to say Verm and have a bag of verm in the picture lol. um yea
