Casing- colonisation question!
    #1260207 - 01/29/03 10:23 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

My first casing has taken a week for the mycelium to start poking through. I have patched it, but my question is, at what percentage of colonistion do I transfer the casing to the fruiting chamber? I'm guessing at an even amount of say, 40%???

Are the patched areas inclusive of the colonisation percentage?
Also how can calcium chloride be reused once it has clumped together and moist? Do I let it dry out by taking the lid off?

hmmm.. if your casing took a week for myc to poke through, then you might have contaminated it ...
i transfer mine at 100% but don't know if it is up to any good so ...

I can't see any discoloration and the FAQ(for dummies) said it can take up to 7 days because the mycelium needs to get over the shock of being ripped apart.

So you wait until your casing is completely white ? The Faq said that the idea wasn't to let the mycelium completely cover the surface. Oh well, if it works for you.

Hmm when I did my casings, well, I contaminated the whole damn thing. Maybe I waited too long??

According to Stamets and Chilton TMC Pg. 136:
"Within three days of application, the mycelium should be growing in to the casing layer."

You may have used too thick of a casing layer. If it was too wet or too dry, it would also slow the progress of the growth. My casings are generally only around a half an inch deep. Just a couple things to consider

That's a good cause for overlay...be careful

You are correct, my casing layer is far too thick, I must have misread the casing TEk for simple minds (Lol! what does that say about my mind???)

I have made another casing today and followed the tek thoroughly and was amazed to see how little you need on top.
Anyway, could someone still tell what percentage of colonisation is needed to put it into the terrarium for pinning?
cheers

Generally, around 80% is recommended. Some people don't wait at all, they just toss the casing in the fruiting chamber. Try both and see which you prefer.
Best of luck to you.

Thanks Jimmy, I will probably wait until about 60% and then go for it. I'm an impatient son of a gun!

Bumpety bump!

Anyone know what to do with calcium chloride after it has become moist and lumpy? Is there a way of drying it out for reuse?
