Vermiculite Hazards/cystic fibrosis/cystitis
    #12596309 - 05/20/10 05:11 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

How can one tell how much if any asbestos  is in their vermiculite, and think its necessary to where a mask when making substrate as ive had this stuff airborn.

It is important to remember that vermiculite is only hazardous if it contains asbestos fibers and these fibers are disturbed enough to become airborne. Asbestos must enter the body to pose a risk. Most vermiculite products contain small amounts of asbestos, but are generally not a great health risk because the amounts are small. However some vermiculite does contain enough asbestos that it should be handled with care.

Individuals exposed to asbestos found in vermiculite for an extended period time are high at risk to health hazards. The longer a person is exposed to a hazard the more likely it will affect the person exposed. Illnesses related to exposure can be asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer.

Early signs of lung cancer can be detected by chest x-ray. The presence of asbestos fibers in the body can be detected only by invasive procedures such as a biopsy.

There is none.
One mine was contaminated; it closed long ago.
There is no asbestos in verm.

Still, don't breathe very much of it.

A quick search of the board will reveal there is no asbestos in vermiculite.  The only mine that had it was shut down decades ago.

One should always wear a mask when working with dust, or dampen the material first to eliminate the dust.  Dust doesn't have to contain asbestos to be dangerous to your lungs.

Even dust from yard work is toxic over time.  Many farmers have what's commonly known as farmer's cough or farmer's lung from years of exposure to dusts / mold.

a cheap fix for a mask would be those cheap dust masks or a bandanna. Always wear these while handling verm if not a better mask.

true, I don't think I've seen a significant particle inhalant hazard like verm in my life as a mycologist though. I mean perhaps lime/gypsum dust as well.

Vermiculite is a hydrated laminar magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate which resembles mica.(WIKIPEDIA)...soooo pure verm is harmless in a carcogenic/toxic way..but obviously you dont want to snort it.

perlite is worse. verm is actually a mica (micatious)  doesnt resemble it. Also it is very easily broken down by water to create clay, so i dont thing it just cause any long term problems

but i suppose it could start a cyst just like having a sliver.
