Casing Soil
    #12600477 - 05/20/10 07:50 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

So, I'm about to make a casing soil, but I don't have any oyster shells, just peat, verm, and lime.  But the only recipe I could find on the site calls for oyster shells.  Does anyone have a recipe that doesn't involve oyster shells?
Also, planning to pasteurize in a burlap sack, just like I did the straw/poo.  Anyone see a problem with doing this?
Thanks.

oyster shells are optional and so long as you have a significant amount of verm or coir in your substrate a casing layer is not likely required. What kind of sub are you using?

Oyster shells are CaCo3 they are a long term buffer.  You are better off using hydrated lime its a instant PH difference. (you want 7-8). Oyster shells ability to affect the PH happen alot later after you add it

Or make your own Cup for Cup of verm and peat moss, buffed to 7-8 PH with lime and a pinch of gypsum

You might find this short snippet from the casing layer video helpful.
