WTF.....fuzzy oysters..........
    #1259848 - 01/29/03 07:22 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Found thise flush of fuzzy oysters in Jamaica.  They have a classic oyster appearance, smell, texture, white gills and spores, but the tops of the fruits are fuzzy like felt.

Thoughts comments?

Schizophyllum commune (Split gills) http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Schizophyllum_commune.html

That's a very common and agressive mushroom. It is not edible but is beleived to have great medicinal properties.

In this writeup by mycologist Tom Volk http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/feb2000.html it sites an incident where Schizophyllum commune was found fruiting in a girls sinuses.

I sniffed a couple of fruitbodies pretty well, I hope it doesnt colonize my head....;)

LOL! You'll stop joking when you read these links  - this fungus is really a human pathogen.
"On at least one occasion the mushroom-like fruiting body was found in a human sinus."
"Basidiomycete Schizophyllum commune has also been reported as an emerging pathogen which was found involving the lungs of a 58-year-old patient, with subsequent dissemination to the brain."

Bravo, zeronio! Excellent links.

There are not many mushrooms which are capable of being pathogenic in humans, but this one is. Nasty.

hey, the info in this thread is juicy, but is that truly a schizophyllum commune?
the ones i see are always little, as in 2-5 cm across, and fruit singly.  and they're not that fuzzy.....

is this it?
i can't believe it can fruit in your sinuses.....

viscid - oops! Looks like you accidentally posted in the links you wanted for the Leucoagaricus naucinus thread.

The link for this species at Mykoweb looks pretty fuzzy to me. And, of course, they are very widespread and fairly variable. If anything, my biggest question is the bluish coloration. Schizophyllum commune ranges from gray to brown, so maybe the color he found is an extreme variation of the gray ones.

The real kicker would be if the gills are split as shown very nicely in the Mykoweb photo. I don't know of any other mushroom with gills like that.
